    Barbour alternative

Hi All, I'm looking to replace my 18 year old Beaufort jacket for everyday use while my old jacket becomes my bushcraft wear. I don't mind the corduroy collar but I want a zip that goes all the way to the top (far more practical IMO) and ideally a Napoleon chest pocket preferably on the outside...

    Axe handle treatment advice

It seems very dry and certainly needs something, (not just my opinion, others have said so too) I'm currently soaking the head then I'll oil it until it stops drinking as R Lewis has said. I'll just make sure I don't over do it. Thanks everyone for your input.

    Axe handle treatment advice

Cheers guys, the wood seems quite dry so it looks like a coat or two of BLO and finished off with beeswax. Do you recommend a pure beeswax as I have a good quality furniture wax which says it contains beeswax/carnauba wax, would that do?

    Axe handle treatment advice

Hi Macaroon, I wasn't sure how good a finish you get straight out of the factory and I thought to enhance it before use. I like the idea of using beeswax. Thanks for your thoughts.

    Axe handle treatment advice

Hi All, I've just received a Helko Werk Journeyman Pack Axe which come with an American Hickory handle treated with BLO. I'd like to treat the handle again before I start to use it in anger and I have some walnut oil in the house. Should I stick with BLO or would it be ok to use walnut oil on...

Article: Great use of Technology to find missing walkers

It's a great system and I have a number of friends in MR in the Lake District where it's been used successfully a number of times. At last a useful reason to have a smart phone (as long as the battery doesn't run out :) Dave

Postmen (and women), what boots do you wear?

What about a waterproof approach shoe? A bit more hard wearing than a trainer but still lightweight. Dave

Emergency, Grangers 2 in 1 treatment not working.

I'd also go with Goatboys theory, I used to work in the outdoor trade and this sort of complaint wasn't uncommon. Any detergent residue will cause problems. Go with the suggestions from Goatboy and Andybythesea and you should be ok. Dave

    Wax cotton canvas coats

Now that's a suggestion that's worth thinking about, thanks for the idea. Dave

    Wax cotton canvas coats

Just re-waxed my Beaufort ready for the winter. I like the style of this jacket but I wish they would design it with a collar that zipped all the way up instead of stopping at the throat. I've slipped some earth cable into the collar as well to make it stand up a bit better. This helps shape it...

    Worcestershire Bushcraft Group(s)?

Hi Ben, not aware of any in this area (Kiddy) but as we're looking to move and just put the house on the market I'll be looking more in the area we'll be living. As yet I don't know where that will be but I've got a new job in the Cheltenham/Gloucester area so it'll somewhere around that part of...

Why do bushcraft and survival skills?

So true, I think some people are just drawn to the outdoors. As Toddy puts these things are hardwired into our brains. Some us just awaken these urges and put them to use. I'm at my most happiest outdoors, it's where I feel most at home and for want of a better phrase "at peace". Dave

    Mountain climbing in flip flops...

We used to live in Keswick and some of the people you would see on the fells just shouldn't have been allowed out by themselves. We once stopped a family with 2 young children (6 or 7ish) walking up Catbells in tracksuit bottoms and cheap trainers (not walking shoes) and t shirts in January...
