    Cheap Line Markers

Mike Taylor from www.uk-hooks.com has responded to my query. The tubing will have a "couple of minutes bright glow" after it's been fully "charged". I'd be interested to see whether there's any kind of longer term, residual glow that would make my guy lines visible throughout the night. I'll...

    calling all scout leaders.

I don't think that the Scout uniform has been practical since, say, the mid 1960s! When I became a Scout in 1970, the shirt was OK, but the uniform trousers were truly dreadful - mushroom grey cavalry twill<shudder>! As a 21st century leader, I have two uniform shirts - one long and one short...

    Cheap Line Markers

Will do. I've got a question in to the supplier to see how long this stuff glows on a "full charge". There are other clip on, luminous guy line markers on the market, and MSR have a set of reflective markers. However, none of the ones I've seen have my required ID of 2mm.

    Cheap Line Markers

In a similar vein, I'm constantly pinging my tarp's 2mm guy lines in the dark, so I've been looking for a way of illuminating them. So, I wondered if the angling community had anything to offer. They must sometimes have a need to see thin lines in the dark. I found this stuff: Super Lumi...

    calling all scout leaders.

Urban myth alert! Where in POR does it say that Explorers (or any other section) have to travel to weekend camps and activities in uniform? Surely this isn't the old "you're not insured if you're not in uniform" chestnut? The wearing of uniform is an entitlement - not an obligation. My...

When literally everything is wet ?

I suspect that I was at the same "do" as Buckshot. Miserden? Slightly OT, but my feet got soaked and stayed that way for most of Sunday. As a consequence, I think that I've rather stupidly contracted a touch of trench foot (and I'm one of those leaders who goes on at the YP about footcare)...

    Knives for Scouts

We use Mora Clippers. They're kept in an unlocked ammo tin in my tent when we're on camp and issued when needed. We're thinking about starting a "Knife and Axe Safety Card" whereby a Scout is issued with a credit card sized, laminated card to show that s/he can use the tools safely. Any...

    Noswaith Dda

I'm learning "conversational Welsh" right now - or at least I'm trying to! Bore da = Good morning (lit. Morning good) Prynhawan da = Good afternoon Noswaith dda = Good evening - the single "d" in "da" mutates to "dd" (pron. "th") after noswaith Nos da = Good night. I'm going through the...

    Phrase origins

Great thread! Idea for a Christmas present (for yourself if you've found this thread fascinating): "Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable" (ISBN 0-304-34004-9). It's the kind of book where you start off by looking for a particular definition but you get so side-tracked reading other...

Lightweight Merino Baselayer - in olive green?

Hi I bought an Ulfrotté 200g/m crew next top in olive green merino wool from Survival School (www.survivalschool.co.uk). I also got a 400g/m full length zip top from them. To complete the set I had to buy the 200g/m leggings from elsewhere. I can't fault Survival School's customer...

    to all Scout leaders

Simon Have a look at http://www.scoutbase.org.uk/library/hqdocs/facts/ (scroll down to the "Adult Support" section). There's shed loads of information on there - including role descriptions for the various types of leader (so you could find out what you may be letting yourself in for)...

    cheap burner/cookware at Lidl

Ah, the Lidl "Trangia". We bought eight for the Scouts last year (£8 each then, I think). They're almost identical to Trangias, but at that price it won't really matter if the Scouts trash them in a couple of years or so (they will). I've heard reports that the burners leak, so don't...

    Helping the local Scout group

:You_Rock_ Hope today's meeting with the SL goes off OK. I'm an Assistant Scout Leader myself, and I know that we'd welcome help such as yours with arms wide open! Re the question of knives, I think that if they're introduced as "tools" - and if that is stressed throughout the session -...

    Calling All Scouts

We've just bought five Frost Clippers from Attleborough Accessories (www.attacc.com) for training our Scouts. £43 + £4 P+P. We'll keep them in a locked ammo box (there'll be a small FAK in there too!) and issue them expressly for training sessions. I plan to get a small group of them to...

    Shaving

Not entirely unrelated, I use King of Shaves shaving oil. A tiny bottle goes a long, long way (100+ shaves?), it weighs next to nothing and it floats :) !

    Children and knifes

My son got his Frost's Mora on a family bushcraft weekend last May. He's now 10.5 and I gave him an SAK (Huntsman) for Christmas - for which I got a hug! When our Scout Leader asked each member of the Troop to name their favourite Christmas present at our first meeting of 2007, my son said...

    Course recommendations

Thanks to everyone who took the time to reply. I'm sorry that I appear to have opened up such a huge can of worms, but hey. I'll review the recommendations and, I hope, make a booking soon. Thanks again for all your comments (I'm a bit mystified by Tengu's though). Cheers

    Course recommendations

Hi I manage a small team of IT consultants and I think that a few days "bushcrafting" would do them a world of good. Could anyone recommend any suitable courses? Thanks in advance.
