At a glance I would suggest that's a Robert Sorby Fingernail Profiler. The platform at the front also accepts other jigs.

A fire is by no means essential but I wouldn't describe them as a 'waste of time and effort'. On it's own, an open fire can be very inefficient but get a reflector at your back (be it a tarp, log, rock, whatever) and things get a whole lot better.
I suspect for many it's not strictly a need...
It looks very similar to my first lathe; basic but perfectly capable. Great for spindle work and OK for bowls with a bit of care and ingenuity.
My only (minor) gripe was having to muck about with the drive belts to change spindle speed. That said you'll never find one with a variable speed...
I'm not sure what the end-goal is here but another option might be liquid latex. Available online and from various model/art shops it can be applied in layers and forms a seamless skin of rubber.
I'll echo the 'Head Off Early' Comment. We did it last Monday, started at 0730 from Ribblehead and met maybe half a dozen people all day.
We made two mistakes: The first was to save the bog for last (Pen-y-Ghent - Ribblehead). The reasoning was that by doing Whernside and Ingleborough first...
Pretty much anywhere South of Flamborough will do. Bridlington down to Spurn Point is fairly reliable and I've found some fairly decent samples as far South as Skegness. You may find the quality varies but with a keen eye I'm sure you will find something to suit your needs
Looking at photos of the Trail Pro it does seem to have a slight taper. Still, it should be really easy to produce a pattern. Since you have the sleeping pad I would suggest just drawing round it in chalk - add a bit for the thickness of the mat and another 10mm or so for the seam.
You have...
Fair comment, I guess we're running a hairs-breadth away from religion, politics and economics. Just as an aside I've read the wikipedia article on dowsing and all the controversy surrounding the sale of devices intended for detecting explosives. Now that is crazy!
It's an interesting...
I used to do this quite a bit as a child, both 'L' wires and forked branch - well two thin bits of bamboo bound with insulation tape. I've even had some success with the pendulum. Again I have little patience with all the mysticism that these activities attract but it's easy to see why...
Try Dunelm Mill, they have one at 13cm. It's a snug fit but pretty much perfect for my needs. I don't know if you have one local to you, let me know if you don't I dare say I could have a scoot round next time I'm over that way
