    Choosing a compass....

Does anybody produce a *quality* non liquid filled baseplate type compass? Swedish made Silva's always had a good reputation, but over the years I have two Type 27 fail ( the needles on both reversed their polarity for no apparent reason) and a Type 4 and a Type 54 both developed bubbles, one...

Looking for a 26" handle for a mattock...

Well the mattock head turned up today and I am very pleased. Size wise, it sits along side the 58 pattern pick to make a nicely matched pair so to speak.. The eye of the mattock is slightly larger than the one on the pick. The pick handle is just about useable as it just goes down a bit further...

Looking for a 26" handle for a mattock...

Thanks again...that was my assumption but just want to make sure I wasn't missing anything....I think the pick restoration I saw was for a "wall hanger" so it probably didn't matter, but my mattock is going to be used in the garden so needs to be done correctly..

Looking for a 26" handle for a mattock...

Thanks Toddy, hopefully the head will arrive tomorrow or Friday so I can have a much what's available over the weekend... I have just watched a video on YouTube showing an American re hanging a miners pick...I was surprised to see he did it like a hammer, ie the head fitting down from the top...

Looking for a 26" handle for a mattock...

Thanks folks, I was in the local farm supply today, but they did not have a huge range...I intended to return once I have got the head so I can see what exactly is required.. As this has a 3lb head, I think the eye will be quite a bit smaller than the one on a 5lb head....it will be interesting...

Looking for a 26" handle for a mattock...

Hi Folks, I have just purchased a vintage Morris No 1 mattock head and was wondering if anybody can suggest a source for a handle? The head weighs about 3lb and is sized between a standard full sized 5lb mattock and the various mini mattocks, so a standard 5lb mattock handle will be much too...

    Folding Fire Box

Hi Folks, I am looking for a stainless steel fold flat fire box to use while fishing. Ideally it would be around a foot square... I know the genuine Firebox is highly regarded, but now seems to be about £90 for the combination package which is much more than I want to spend. Looking on ebay...

bleach/whiten cut sections of deer antler.

Hydrogen Peroxide (ladies hair bleach) will take the exterior colour out of an antler..You can buy it in chemists in small bottles for a couple of quid. I would take a piece of cotton wool dampened it with peroxide and leave it sit on the cut surface you want to bleach and leave it for several...

    Ghille or Kelly Kettle

For me the deciding factor was that I can now buy KK in stainless steel. If weight is not critical I would highly recommend a stainless model. With the aluminium versions, I've seen the firebox suffer quite badly from repeated use..

    Kit recommendations

I have the Rush 24, and to be honest, its more of a "manbag" than a serious daysack. I use it to hold al my bits when I go shooting, but it usually stays in the car. If you want an OD daysack, but don't want to look like a Rambo wanabe, I'd recommend the Berghaus Munro or perhaps one of the...

    What's wrong in this image...

Sadly, that's my observation too...I live not too far from a MacDonald's and the litter is terrible..When they received planning permission for it one of the conditions was they clean up litter within 500m of property...They do this mostly, but sometimes when they get a bit slack, I help them by...

Out of the way campsites, Cheshire or North Wales

I called in there the other week, and I couldn't believe how busy it was.. I hadn't been there for maybe 10 years, and the amount of static caravans on there was very suprising. As you drove down, you used to be able to camp on the left down by the small brook, but that looks like all...

Out of the way campsites, Cheshire or North Wales

If your English and caught after dark, I think we can still shoot with a long bow...other than that in some places you might get your tent burt down!:)

Out of the way campsites, Cheshire or North Wales

I haven't been yet, but this looks worth a try: http://www.tynllan-camping.co.uk/ From talking to the lady who runs it, its pretty much a field with access to a tap at the farm...While not wild camping, and not a busy over developed camp site either...

Beach Camp Suggestions in North Wales Wanted.

Can't recommend anywhere in particular, but have wondered what the legal position is re wild camping on the beach in England and Wales? I know there are notices by some beaches saying camping is prohibited, usually under local bye-laws..That makes me wonder if no such notices exist whether...

    Army mess tent

My first thought is unless your middle name is "Billy Smart" what an earth would you do with it even if you got the poles???

    Ghille or Kelly Kettle

Cheers for that..Just thinking what else would work as a fry pan for use on the base, and was wondering about the American GI two piece mess tins which are stainless steel?

    Ghille or Kelly Kettle

Not sure what a porcelain ball would actually do? Anyway, I agree with the above in that its easy enough to see/hear when the water is boiling.. I had mine out the other morning while fishing...from stopping the car to drinking a cup of tea was 8 minutes without rushing... As far as cooking...

    Ghille or Kelly Kettle

I recently bought a Kelly Kettle (scout model) after years of having mixed thoughts about them. The thing that swayed it for me was them being available in Stainless Steel. So far I've only used to brew up a few times, but I have been very impressed. I have the Hobo stove for it and it does turn...

Early Britons: Have we underestimated our ancestors? Horizon tonight

Just the way of the world back then. The tribes that were in the UK prior to the Romans arriving were certainly not merely peaceful farmers living in harmony, but fairly savage with plenty of fighting and pillaging. The fact that Hill Forts and other similar early fortifications tell us that...
