    Hammocks and creepy crawlies

I thought the standard form was to wash the strapping in pemrethin (insectiside), the Ash tip also seems good if a little labour intensive.

    Wellies!

If you are a farmer/outdoor worker the Le Chameau boots seem to be popular but you need to wear them all the time to justify the price. Like any wellie I have ever used they do not offer good lateral support. I bought cheap £8.99 ones from the local farm supply depot and wear mine through...

    Chevalier "Arizona" Hat

Hi, Purchased the above hat for the huge sum of £50, it is a brimmed hat with a waxed type finish, what really made me go for it is that it is gore tex lined. I know Gore tex has it detractors but for me it works at keeping out water and seemed well suited to a hat. I had used it about...

    Torch Advice

I have a Fenix L2T (3w Luxeon 2AA batteries) and a Fenix P1 (3W Luxeon 1x CR123A) The P1 is amazing, batteries are £1.99 online, (£6.99 in shops) and last for about 2 hours. It is small enough to carry with my house keys and is extremely bright. If you want light weight this is the one. The...

Why the hell did I bother!

I happily lend out kit, but only to people who have used that type of kit before, and only lend when I think the person cannot afford that kit themselves, otherwise they should buy their own. People who are borrowing kit they cannot afford, rather than can't be bothered to buy, treat it with a...

What do you own the most of?

There seem to be a few torch hoarders on here, my favorite item as well, I have Petzl Tikka + Petzl Tikka XP Princeton Tec Apex (best headtorch) 2AA Maglite + Terralux LED conversion 3D Maglite + Diamond 1W zetex luxeon LED conversion Fenix L2T (best torch) And I now want a Fenix...

    Petzl tikka xp

IMHO the tikka plus is better than the XP. The XP is not bright enough for range work and the light is not as even for work around camp. I much prefer the light out of the +. If you want a small headtorch for range work I would try one of the princeton tecs such as the EOS (which I have not...

    Cleaning Gortex boots

I had a pair of Karrimor KSB's which were "own brand" waterproof. I completely neglected them for years and they never leaked, left them for months caked in hard mud. My new Solomans with Gore Tex get slightly less rough treatment because now we have no boot shed so I have to keep them...

    Lamps and lanterns

Fixed camp I use a basic gas lantern, as they give out enough light to comfortably read and fill and area with useable light. They are only an option if you have an ability to move heavy loads such as a car. On the move and if camping on my own I find a headtorch is the most effective means of...

    Hartmanns solution and canulars

:) I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this thread, whats clear to me is that all who have contributed seem to want to make the world a better safer place, and all are trying to help. Probably the people who make up "the rules" are also just trying to ensure the most effective care is given in...

    What to see in Vancouver

I have flown Air transat and it is cattle class travel but cheap. Flew Zoom last year and for £50 each way upgraded to "premium". It was still over £250 cheaper than BA for 2 of us. I fly all the time with work and can say the Zoom flight was the best I have been on. It was an upgraded seat...

    Cheap Hammock?

I have an extra long one. Its okay but only comes with basic ties, you need to factor in possibly some webbing or rope and I added carabiners (think thats spelt right) to get it set up right. It works and is 2 layer so fits a thermarest inbetween for cold weather. Only critisism is its a bit...

Right... that's it... I have to get this off my chest....

I have the Nomad hammock, an ex army basha, an ex army gore tex bivi and a thermarest. It may seem excessive but I have slept out in winter with light snow covering twice and it was warm enough. In the summer months you could carry less. With that combo the only thing that gets dirty are...

    Equipment That Didn't Work Out

The grandfather of multi tools the Swiss army knife Swiss Champ. Great to look at, good for clipping toenails, rubbish saw and pliers. The leatherman style offers so much more however bought cheap copy of leatherman from a garage, it was rubbish. Ended up getting Leatherman as pressie from...

Survival Straw......Is it the "Real McCoy"?

Hi Spacemonkey, Well done on your efficiency, if we all minimise over consumption there would be significant polution reductions. My point was probably badly made but I was referring to all fridges including those of the supermarkets, restaurants etc. also was maybe a bit opinionated. Hope...

Survival Straw......Is it the "Real McCoy"?

Sorry Bambodoggy, I was raised on a farm and am a bit defensive when it comes to farming issues, spent my childhood reading rubbish in the papers put about by various governemnts for their own political ends. :) Having used water filters and knowing the amount of pumping required to get at...

Survival Straw......Is it the "Real McCoy"?

Think this is a popular misconception, we are overproducing food in the west, but it is not stored in warehouses it is stored in our fridges, restaurants and supermarkets and binned when it is not sold or not eaten. In the highest levels of overproduction my understanding is that "food...

    Headlights and tac torches

abetterworld.co.uk have had them in the past but are sold out, hitch n hike also have them but at £69.95 which is steep. I got mine on Ebay from a US shop at $80 inc postage and avoided the taxman which would have been £10. So total was £47 + £10 tax. Well worth the effort though.

    3 different bivvy bags

I have a british army gore tex one, got it brand new, and it does what it says on the tin. Only used it in freezing conditions so a sleeping pad was essential. If I was buying again I would go for one you could peg out and put a hoop in the head end.
