Looking for Participants in Southampton - Archaeology Experiment

Hi everyone, I'm running an archaeology experiment next week for our funded project Life at the Cutting Edge, and am looking for volunteers in the Southampton area to come in for 90 minutes. It will involve using stone tools and taking a dexterity test and some hand measurements, and being...

A Stone Age field school: Wild Cognition

A field school for learning Stone Age hunter-gatherer technologies is open for registration. It is open to anyone, internationally, as long as you are physically fit. Wild Cognition runs from June 6th to 26th, the first week on campus at UCCS in Colorado Springs, the second and third are...

    Stone Age shelter in Oxfordshire

Why do you assume people on our project have no relevant experience? It's not nice to judge people like that... as Toddy says, sometimes experimental archaeologists are skillfull people.

    Stone Age shelter in Oxfordshire

Archaeologists buried an elephant at Tubingen University... I wonder if that's in their plans? ;)

    Stone Age shelter in Oxfordshire

We didn't base it on a site, but used what was offered in the immediate environment to build a comfortable dwelling using pre-agricultural technologies. There really aren't a lot of archaeologically recovered pre-agricultural European dwellings, period. Mesolithic, Upper Palaeolithic or before...

    Stone Age shelter in Oxfordshire

Stone Age is just what we've been using since there's been some media attention... really we're all Palaeolithic archaeologists (and mostly Lower Palaeolithic archaeologists at that!) so what we mean by 'stone age' is really non-descript Palaeolithic. Or Upper Palaeolithic if you really want to...

    Experimental Archaeology books

Hmmm there is an MA in experimental archaeology at Exeter, I wonder if you could get hold of some of their reading lists...? (Is that the course you'll be doing??)

    Experimental Archaeology books

Is there a specific era or topic you are looking for experiments in? I recommend the experimental archaeology facebook page too, good group :)

    Stone Age shelter in Oxfordshire

I agree with your sentiment - and it's not just 'white folk' that are guilty. So many people are divorced from that lifeway and make incorrect judgements about its simplicity. I think a lot of experimental shelters are built by people that aren't living in them, and are reconstructing what...

    Stone Age shelter in Oxfordshire

I like that! Did the Welsh have reduced smoke in their houses for some reason then? Were they on to chimneys sooner? Or just better quality wood? The 10,000BC season 1 shelter that the other team made had a smoke hole I'm guessing because they probably based it off other stone age replica...

    Stone Age shelter in Oxfordshire

Hi Toddy, did you read the post? The shelter that the people who made the season 1 shelter (not made by Klint or any of us) made it with a smoke hole, which like you said acts as a conduit for the heat straight out the top. Klint highlighted that in the post as a problem, why it was a problem...

    Stone Age shelter in Oxfordshire

The Oxford Palaeotechnology Society and Wilderness Pioneers got together last year and made an experimental Stone Age shelter. Klint Janulis (member as well as host of 10,000BC) has written a series of blog posts about how the project came about, including some of the inspiration that came from...

    Mora Pro Robust?

That's my knife! (yes, I only have one) I love it. I prefer its shorter blade, I feel I have more control.

    Scary bears

Bears are usually fine, they are only a danger if they are protecting their cubs, you surprise them, or they want your food (or they're a stupid juvenile that's too curious for their own good). Usually they're way more scared of you, and loud noises and throwing stuff at them will deter them if...

Stone Age Experiment in Oxford - looking for participants

It's not saying I can't, I could also work with minors - I just have to make that a part of my application, and it's easier to not. Ethics boards are there to make sure your experiment is safe for people and you're not hurting them physically or mentally, what kind of personal details you are...

Stone Age Experiment in Oxford - looking for participants

Thanks Tim! You'll just have to come along to one of our flintknapping events :) I think we'll be having one in a few weeks (early March?)

Stone Age Experiment in Oxford - looking for participants

The ethics proposal I submitted asks if I will be dealing with people older than 65 - it's just to avoid the 'working with vulnerable populations' thing. It's not prejudice on my part! The best knapper in the UK is much older than 65 ;)

    10000bc starts tomorrow

For sure - but those would not be questions addressed by evolutionary cognitive archaeology (well... not by anyone I would endorse!). We are not looking for the content of the thought (surely lost, unless written down) but its limitations and ability... ie not what someone called something, but...
