    The midgies are back :(

I read midges is what kept Scotland uninhabited for many years. And then they invented midge eaters, I was sleeping out at Tyndrum once and in the morning a cloud of them hovered overhead. I lit sheets of newspaper one after another and incinerated them. Suddenly they gave up and flew off. No...

    Survival Tins - Updates

I do carry a disposable propane canister stove for cold morning when I do not want to leave my sleeping bag, and for stealth situations, however as good as these other stoves reviewed are, I will not use them any more. I have tried a few. I simply place two flattish stones six inches apart, and...

    Best Soap for repelling Insects

I am surprised insect repellents that contain Deet have not been mentioned. Deet is good, however be aware that Deet works just as well at 35% as 80%. And therefore repellents containing Deet can be diluted and you will have more. However it is not in soap.

    Best Soap for repelling Insects

Eating a lot of garlic helps. Maybe rubbing of the skin would help more.

How to blend into the background?

Just a couple of points. If anyone is about and might see you, camp with the setting sun behind you. In the morning and you think the farmer will come through a field gate, camp so that you are between the gate and the rising sun. I was once sleeping on the edge of a freight yard, and the...

    Landowners Official Permission

In England there is a right to roam law which give persons access to certain public land, and private land. Plus there is rights of way, and public footpaths across privately owned land. I have never had a problem. Most farmers can not be bothered chasing walkers off their land and if the...

    Tent or bivvy?

I did start out as a kid carrying a tent, but the weight was high and putting the tent up was irksome, especially in the dark. Next morning packing the tent in cold weather was not a good start to the day. I know there are better tents now, but some places I bed down have not been safe. Having...

    Tent or bivvy?

Yes I checked and you are right Erbswurst. The outer layer is water resistant and not waterproof. The problem is that the outer layer does lose its water resistance and becomes wet, and that affects the membrane inside.. I am not sure how. Gore Tex in boots because of constant movement is...

    Tent or bivvy?

Well, I am quite sure the bivi bag is not working because the fabric becomes wet, when the water should just roll off. Comparing this with my Gore Tex jacket, which also becomes wet, I think Gore Tex weave just opens up after awhile. Spraying the fabric with water repellant would work, but then...

    Tent or bivvy?

I am glad to see this forum is active and I would like to add something. I have a Gore Tex bivi bag, and it was good. However, the water does sip through now. I believe this is by capillary action. When the rain is hard I sometimes have to throw a light tarp over the top. Another way is I spread...
