I'd simply say that a light, good quality down jacket is a very versatile and effective garment but also very expensive. If you can get one at a decent price though I'd recommend it.
I have a british army issue basha in dpm, very good condition, and a army bivi bag, olive green, for trade. Would like a Wenger Ranger Swiss Army knife. Failing that, I don't know if your interested make an offer. Cheers.
As MikeLA said, could be an earlier patern, though I think they also have a button on hood. The buttons are on the hood not the jacket. The button holes are on the underside of the collar, maybe you missed them ?
As you can see you've walked into a bit of a mine field. Just a few obs; the smocks are certainly not all made of the same material. The old gaberdine ones have a nice feel and are windproof but are certainly not the toughest. The original S95 that rabitsmacker was referring to was a ripstop...
Think you might have answered your own question at the end there. If it's really cold you could try some og m65 trousets with the button in liner (very warm) or there is a version of the old German 'mole skin' trousets with a thermal lining too, both green/greay, you could nikwax them for a bit...
Seems overkill to me. If I'm on the ground I just use a camping pillow from mountain warehouse, under a fiver I'm sure and small enough to stuff in somewhere in your pack, job done.
I carry a Gerber dime and a small torch on my keyring (attached to a small carabina) and a few plasters and antiseptic wipes in my wallet. It's all I need (in any realistic scenario) and that way I actually carry them every day.
I agree, an army surplus smock sounds just what you're after, huge choice on eBay etc. they cover all your criteria. Now that the army have changed camo patern you can pick up an unissued woodland dpm one for £20 or something.
Wow, just goes to show there is t a single part of this hobby that's fetish free! I only have two, Karrimor SF 60/100, and Karrimor SF Preditor 45. Don't often use the big one as the Preditor, with side pouches etc is often big enough. Can't really see that I'd need any more... Jackets however....
Just incidently, I got a Carinthia Defence 4 sleeping bag for use with my hammock this winter. They have a central zip and get good reviews so I'm looking forward to using it soon, it cost about what you have to spend but someone on here was selling one new much cheaper, might be worth a look.
I camp in hammocks most the time now and I have to say they I'd get a sleeping bag. Investing £150 in a decent sleeping bag (should be able to get a down one for that sort of money) is a smart move. They work in hammocks (you can get a DD underquilt for £45) and you have a sleeping bag for more...
Just got my brand new Carinthia Defence 4 today and thought I would write a quick out-the-box review to try and answer a few of the questions I had when I was considering this bag.
the fist thing you notice is the quality of the compression sack, which is made of a nice watetproof material...
Little update for anyone who's interested. I've just taken delivery of my Carinthia defence 4 (185). My initial impressions are very positive. It looks like a really quality bag. My concerns that I had ordered the wrong size and that I would find the small face hole a problem vanished the moment...
Well I'm glad you said all that because I've just ordered one in that size. Sounds like we are a similar build so I'm hoping ally well. What did you mean by the upper part is much lighter ? (Than the longer version?? Surly not). Anyway, size wise it sounds good and that's my main worry at the mo.
