BBQ fire starter from Azda supermarket

The white firelighters are petroleum products. Think it's kerosene and an emulsifier. Burning it will produce carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide, but the majority of static residue will be just carbon and potentially some unburnt kerosene and emulsifier. In the concentrations...

Are GPS units really necessary these days?

GPS on phones are great, but not all cope well with damp conditions and not great if you fall over, hiking GPS are more rugged I guess. I owned one for geocaching years ago, I lent it to someone who passed a few years ago and never got it back. I haven't really missed it though.

    Forest schools are a failure.

Kids are like leaky cups, you pour knowledge into them and you never really know what will stick. I still struggle to get Sam out of the house and into the woods. Kasia on the other hand loves being in the woods and screaming in them. What she gets out of it I'll never know. Perhaps it's just...

    20th Anniversary Celebration

Should be popping by on the Friday and staying until the Sunday. I may see whether the wife is amenable to me going up and arriving late on the Thursday to try and make the Friday a full day.

    Pocket book "apps"

I used to go out with a pocket guide, but with the advent of all these clever "take a pick and let AI identify it" has anyone got some recommendations for free/paid apps which have effectively replaced your pocket guide for the short bimbles in the wood? There's obviously hundreds in the app...

Knife - using one of those new fangled waterjet thingymajigs.

Bit more work on the blade. I cut up some dyed curly birch and then using a disc sander, belt grinder and some manual sanding got it handled to the point I'm relatively happy. Needs more sanding. It's not great, but it's a nice first knife. Now I just need to handle the ones from Dave.

Knife - using one of those new fangled waterjet thingymajigs.

I know you all like to live vicariously, so here's a timelapse video which'll answer some questions. And some pics. This particular one I scaled down so I could fit a larger blade underneath and this was a trial. This was about £5 of cutting costs. Skeletonizing would pretty easy with this...

Knife - using one of those new fangled waterjet thingymajigs.

we have all the things - I run https://eehack.space and we've just built a belt grinder specifically for the purpose!

Knife - using one of those new fangled waterjet thingymajigs.

So, I've volunteered myself to make knifes. Well, teach others to. So need to work out how to do it myself. I've done some tracing on some knife blanks and I think I like this one. I'm cutting it out on our "Wazer" which is a hobbyist waterjet cutter. Much more bushcrafty than an angle...

Forest Knights / Sussex Bushcraft Club Xmas Meal

Had the pleasure of attending the Forest Knights & Sussex Bushcraft Club Xmas Meal. Whilst the woodland has had a fair bit of logging due to ash dieback, we were easily able to find a place to hammock and get down to the hard job of drinking some mulled cider. I didn't get a pic of the meal...

    Exploding Gas Cartridges

I use the little suitcase ones fairly often with scouts and have also used it at the moot. At the moot I used an amazon basics cast iron pan (with frying pan lid) and worked fine. I have only seen them explode when, as previously noted, someone puts something much bigger over the top of them...

Frame or integral? rucksack (pack) design

I've been down the rabbit hole recently. I just bought a Bergen 100ltr from eBay. I was looking at external frame packs, but I couldn't beat the £50 price for a larger sort of rucksack. My main purpose for such a beast was to get my insulated hammock, tarp, sleeping bag, mini pillow...

    Thanks!

Thanks Tony & Co, Mods, Forest Knights etc for a good weekend. Kasia had a blast and was asleep 20 minutes into the trip home. Sounds peaceful but she was up all night having been well rested! I hope nobody minded the Kasia whooping through the woods too much. I hope to attend again next...

Who’s Going to the First Summer Moot at Rough Close?

I don't think I've ever seen you camp light.

A few of the workshops expect at the Moot

I will be bringing my daughter this year and doubt I'll have the time I'm afraid (she's a bit of a law unto herself) so if anyone is thinking "Tim'll probably do that" be aware I probably won't be able to run workshops as I'll be running after her - the wife has a broken foot so can't really...

2023 Winter Moot - Festival of Outdoor Cookery

Hi all, being a new site I don't really know the layout very well, and it's handy to get an idea what's going on and where. This is the site map. Wayne mentioned our camping area would be left of the main road, with mods in area 2 and activities between the rifle range and the campire circle...
