What beekeeping related activities did you do recently?

A split off with 10 frames and a queen is around 3000SEK. Complete hives I've seen being sold for anything between 4000 and 5000SEK I am hoping for a swarm. We have been seeing exceptionally many bees, dark ones and yellow ones, in our garden this spring during the dandelion bloom. So there are...

What beekeeping related activities did you do recently?

I am not. Had 2 hives with populations, but both starved due to being weak and having a bad, dry season. They didn't make it through the following winter. And since bees have become excessively expensive here I was not able to get new ones either.

What beekeeping related activities did you do recently?

Relocated my 2 TBH's and cleaned them up. To my surprised I found a fresh and clean rate. Must've been built last year, but I suspect the bees left the hive, because the sewage ventilation pipes were to near. Bad air, I think.

Making a chest rig / repurposing an old gasmask pouch

@TeeDee ; FAK, firekit, plastic bag, paracord, handkerchief, compass, bugrepellent/lipbalm. In winter a space blanket and a spare pair of knitted gloves are added.

    Lockdown garden camping.

The chair looks like the viking-style principle of 2 boards shoved into each other.

Day Out 1st of maj, a rainy day - rather green than red!

And then... lunch!! On today's menu was Austrian gulash soup..... from a can. For those that have such a cooking kit as I do, the trick is to stick the hook through the square eye on the side and move the eye of the hook over the second notch in the handle. That way you can handle the pot and...

Day Out 1st of maj, a rainy day - rather green than red!

I took the palatka and spread it out over the boughs, gather a few handfulls of all the small twigs laying about, put mu sittingpad on top and laid down, one half of the palatka under me, the other over. It was quite comfortable and I lay there for a while, listening to the birds, the wind and...

Day Out 1st of maj, a rainy day - rather green than red!

In Sweden the 1st of may is a socalled "red day", meaning a national holiday. It is a celebration for and by the working class, a day where socialists of all sorts go out and have marches. For or against what is unclear to me, really. I myself rather have a green day in order to avoid red of any...

The Tale of the Three Shelters

Glad you liked it! Coming friday or sunday I'll be going back. Forecast says it will be raining then, so I want to find out how it all will hold up during that kind of weather.

The Tale of the Three Shelters

Phase 1 - Plash palatka 10 minutes Phase 2 - One man shelter 1,5 hours. Plus maybe an hour more when completely covered with moss Phase 3 - lean-to 2,5 hours plus probably an hour more to complete it

The Tale of the Three Shelters

Finally it was time for some testing and I must say that the bed was quite comfortable. I can imagine getting a good night's rest on that. By then it was time to pack up and I did something I normally would never do; I left it all in place. Partly because it had gotten so late and partly because...

The Tale of the Three Shelters

After lunch it was time for phase 3; an all-natural lean-to. My first ever lean-to to be honest. And again only using my hatchet. I found a pair of suitably spaced trees and used to roughly man length poles to shore up the top pole against those trees. I used the thicker trunks of the trees to...

The Tale of the Three Shelters

By now It was time for (a belated) lunch! I cleared a rock from its mossy blanker, carefully rolling that back, so that it could be put back in place once I was done. It also made a much more stable base for my messkit & burner. For lunch was leftover beef&bean stew and that can be really hard...

The Tale of the Three Shelters

The entire structure was then covered using smaller boughs which I pushed into the lattice from the bottom up. That way they will act as tiles as shed water on the outside. I also did a small patch covered with moss and laced together with small birch twigs, which would create a completely...

The Tale of the Three Shelters

It was time once again to hit "the greens". We had an almost summerlike week, loads of sunshine and temperatures dangerously close to 20C. Then the wind turned north again and those temperatures plummeted. The sun made itself a lot less seen too. Today was supposed to be reasonably sunny with...

Making a chest rig / repurposing an old gasmask pouch

I tried it the other day, wearing it as a chest pouch, during a hike through the woods and loaded it up with my cellphone, which really fits perfectly in one of the compartments and which was easily accessible, and my 8x40 binoculars. I hardly noticed the pouch being there! It rode really...

Making a chest rig / repurposing an old gasmask pouch

For a while now I have been thinking about getting myself a bino-harness; a setup of straps for carrying a heavier type of binoculars while being out and/or moving. However forking over around 500SEK for a decent quality set somehow did not sit right. On the other hand I had this British WW2...

I just HAD to get out!

@Corso If you tie the fabric into tight knots, there the previous dye will remain most and new dye will adhere least. You get the flower/sun shaped like blotches. When twisting the fabric you get elongated pattern. But I would recommend batik dyes. These do not need high temperatures and have...

I just HAD to get out!

Glad you people liked it! As for the anorak & camo; it is indeed the famous Swedish snowanorak and the camo is a long going project. At first I dyed it with natural dyes, trying to get an earthy olive, mottled effect. That did not work out. Apart from the mottled part. So I wanted to add a...
