A time for contemplation.... and testing.

I am actually running out of doors pretty fast now. I was aiming for an education to become a teacher, which would be another path altogether.

It might be a blessing in disguise, but it also means I will have a serious problem finding a job I can do. Here you go: backpackbasket-thread

    A Frankenstein backpackbasket

The legs of the basket did not fit the frame very well and I ended up removing the hind ones completely and shortening the front ones, so that the basket sits level on the ground. Additional plus is that the bottom does not touch the ground, but then again nothing really does, since there's moss...

    A Frankenstein backpackbasket

This project, or the idea for it, started to come together, while rummaging through my accumulated stuff. Stuff that I had saved from all sorts of places. Stuff that became redundant, left over or other people's garbage. I had the left over frame from the LK35, a few salvaged pack baskets, a...

    Modified Sub Zero Sleeping System.

The latter bit is a habit I share with you. The system looks real good. I have gathered similar items and hope to make my own soon. The towel-thing is a great tip! Do you use it like a hood?

I had a bit of difficulty with the firesteel, getting the sparks to land where I wanted to. It has been months since I last used it. But it worked. And the camera fell over for no particular reason... After an hour or 2, having cleaned up the area (and found some peace of mind), had my...

A time for contemplation.... and testing.

After I had removed all the twigs, branches and poles I was left with a thick carpet of needles.... where one of the new residents made itself known! Too bad you can not see the iridescent blue lines around its shields. The poles I put upright next to a spruce and I did the same with a number of...

A time for contemplation.... and testing.

The other day I just had to go out. I needed time to think, time to clear my head, time to release all the bottled up frustration and anger or at least some of it. Yesterday I got notice that I have not been accepted into university and that hit home harder than anticipated. All of the built up...

Day Out Seeking solace in higher places

I was back at the car about an hour later, having met still more people on their way up. I had hoped for less company, but should have known better. This is quite a popular destination and especially now that many are forced to stay home during summer. The best time would be early autumn, I...

Day Out Seeking solace in higher places

The hike in itself was quite uneventful, except for one near miss, where I stumbled over a root, descending, almost making me tumble down the path I was following. Not a good place to break some bones. I started meeting people, which I could hear coming a mile away, disturbing the silence and...

Day Out Seeking solace in higher places

So I headed out again, wanting to revisit a place I had not been to for years; the nature reserve of the Bispbergs Klack. The hike I had in mind is not all that long; 5km all in all, I guess, but the terrain is not really easy. When I arrived at the parkinglot at the foot of the massive, I saw...

Day Out Seeking solace in higher places

After my cave adventure and a nice, quiet gathering with some of our "local" group, I figured I had found peace of mind again or at least some of it, but then..... Things happened and my stress levels skyrocketed again. This summer is proving to be one of the least relaxed and pleasurable ones...

Day Out Going underground, facing some of my demons

We found ice on our way up. And here's where it gets interesting. Olli is an assisting guide in these mines and he know there was a cavern under the ice we walked over. At one point he lowered himself into a shallow trench, sat down and slid himself under the ice! There was a 50cm gap into...

Day Out Going underground, facing some of my demons

At one point we were told to extinguish our headlights and we stood there for several minutes, while our guide told stories about how she and the divingteams spent the nights here and when waking not knowing if their eyes were closed or open. She also told us to think about how to get out, if...

Day Out Going underground, facing some of my demons

We had to travel by cabelline over some eerily azure coloured water. But also used alternative means of getting around... Down and down we went... ...over a 60 meter long hangbridge... Deeper still... I am the one...

Day Out Going underground, facing some of my demons

Sounds dramatic, huh? But no Balrogs were awakened, nor goblins encountered. Well, those who know me, know that I am not overly fond of caves or mines (to little dwarf-genes, I suppose) and that I like tight spaces even less! No, I am not afraid of the dark and yes, I am slightly...

Dutch 'zip down' Gen 1 side pouches - whats the velcro for?

Yes, they are to be connected in the way shown, when using them as a daypack. Keeps the ends of the pack halves together, reducing tension on the zipper, but also for creating a more "solid" backside in general. We had them on our Vulcan II's in the day as well.

    How much impact is acceptable?

Want to do a fun exercise? Retrace just one trip to its very source. And I mean every step of the way from leaving your frontdoor to returning there. Where does the car come from? What was needed to get it to your place? Where does your gear come from? What was needed to get it to your place...
