The sound this makes as it goes through the water.... Badly needed today!

    Importance of a knife

I take it you must drive about in the cheapest production car available? Only joking but it all comes down to personal preference, yeah a hultafors or mora does the job just fine but people sometimes like to make their own or buy a more expensive knife a) because they have the money and b)...

    legal definition of "locking mechanism"

My understanding was that the law makers agreed with you, the intent was to allow locking pocket knives or rather not disallow them but the particular 'case' set a precedent which has yet to be overturned. It's good to raise these things once in a while people sometimes learn something!

    legal definition of "locking mechanism"

Yep, that's your get out of jail card right there. :) It's a fairly good idea to only carry fixed or lockers if you have 'good reason' there are plenty good UK legal folders out there then you don't even need to think about it. My cakes are already classed as offensive weapons and in 17...

    legal definition of "locking mechanism"

<groan> If you have the courage of your convictions (not sorry!) go for it but if the copper/judge disagrees with you and interprets the situation as you need to move the ring to allow the blade to close then you would be wrong and have to bear the consequences. In reality the chances of you...

    legal definition of "locking mechanism"

As Nicey said But I get people want to poke and prod a little to see if there is any wiggle room but lawyers are smart, maybe not commonsensical but smart...

    legal definition of "locking mechanism"

There is no reference to whether or not it needs to be a part of the knife or not, the knife must be "immediately foldable at all times" ie no button to push ring to remove etc. You are of course welcome to use your argument in your defence... :) The law is an bottom but it is what it is (until...

    legal definition of "locking mechanism"

But it is cut and dried, right now, today, if it locks, it's a fixed blade to all intents and purposes. The nature of case law is that it is the law until it is overturned by challenge. Even if it is challenged and upheld, there is nothing to stop someone challenging it and overturning it...

    legal definition of "locking mechanism"

Pulled from the excellent BritishBlades legal section; ie anything that stops it closing by simply pushing on the blade is classifed as a locking mechanism Hope this helps,

    Frost River Bushcraft Pack

It's a version of the nessmuk pack shown here There were (at least) two versions of this pack, the current one, with the brown border on the flap and the one Michael has for sale. I've have owned both in my canvas addicted life and prefer this version as I think it's a little larger, the lid...

    MSR Mugmate.

    I got one of these I quite like. You can keep all your stuff inside the cup so doesn't take much room and gives you a big cup. From an old review;

A question for the Archaeologists, -How would you provenance a slate item?

Slate has different properties, hardness, colour, composition, Ph etc. You could try and get slate with known provenance and compare/contrast. IIRC Scottish is harder and darker, welsh is a little softer and more 'purpley' and spanish is a little softer again. Go to a stone mason and ask...

    The Strangest Sheath...

+1, sometimes the sabre or broadsword is called a knife but they are not by any stretch, knives.... Cracking sheath though HG, love the shading of it Cheers Alan

    Multi tool carry

If it locks then you need good reason, if the cutting edge is greater than 3" then you need good reason. We can discuss what good reason is and the reality/madness of UK knife laws until the cows come home but that there's the law...

    Frost River backpacks

I was generalizing, the most I spent on any of the packs in the pic was 120 quid from one of the mods on here. They are maybe about 150/160 new. Cheers, Alan

    Frost River backpacks

Lol, like this? or this? What they lose on practicality they make up for in soul. Wooden handled knives, why bother, get some indestructible plastic in there! A good modern LW backpack could set you back a couple of hundred quid, about the same as a waxed canvas from FR so the right...

    Frost River backpacks

If you're talking a multiday hike then I'd say no, the packs are too heavy (even empty) for something like that and as mentioned before weight distribution isn't the best. I do regularly use my Nessmuk and Timber Cruiser juniors on day hikes (5 to 7 miles) and they work fine for me. They are...

    Going to USA

Yes you can carry a multitool in your checked in baggage. Do it every time I travel over, never had an issue. Also carried lockers and fixed blades again with no issues, no weapons though they may still get you in trouble. Depending where you are going do a googlemap search on outdoors...
