    Case for campfire frying pan.

Since the sewing kit was out i knocked up a case for the steel frying pan with the folding handle. I left one bottom corner square to allow for the somewhat sharp edge on the folding handle. I'll cut a other round cutting board to fit in the pan. Atb Tom

    Case for mini grill

Since the one that came with it was crud I've knocked up a waxed canvas case for the mini grill I got a couple of weeks back. The top folds in so it seals up pretty well to keep the soot and Ash off the rest of my kit. Also made a couple of leather belts long enough to go over wool bush...

    What did you buy today?

Still got my Glisade, had to have the plastic bits of the back system sorted and I got it the year it was only available in a awful purple colour. Couldn't afford to replace it now. The lousy colour has meant I've always used a (green) rain cover which has helped keep it in good nick. I've...

    What did you buy today?

Herself took me to Go Outdoors to pick up some regatta pull over fleece shirts while they are 12 quid for two. More for working in outdoors than bushy stuff as I've a decent amout of Ridgeline fleeces . Still they are XXXL and a good OG colour and will stop me wrecking the good stuff...

    Do you smoke a pipe?

I'm off smoking for a while, until my general health improves and the whole covid thing is more or less sorted, but look forward to digging out my pipes and paraphernalia for the occasional smoke this summer. One thing I've found is the longer the stem the better the smoke so even though they...

    What did you buy today?

Picked up a 2 foot square offcut of 18mm ply for the band saw wheeled base and the nuts and bolts needed and ordered a 8 foot by 4 foot sheet of the same and 4 18mm x 6 mm edging strips to make a false top for the Sheds pool table to use as a cutting out table for sewing and leather work. I've...

    What did you buy today?

Two yards of 1/4 inch mild steel rod and a yard of steel tube to match to make a wider version of the simple 3 legged stand/trivet like Stabilotherm make to go with their frying pans. The originals not quite wide enough to go over the UCO folding fire hearth steamer flower thing I use. Also...

File block holder for wood vice.

Years back i picked up a 4 sided file block new thinking it would be ideal for removing lots of material from say a chipped blade. However it slid about so I thought I'd make a holder to go in a vice like a old school sharpening stone. It's taken me until now to get round to it. The tops...

    Rush cutting sickle/knife?

Finished cleaning up the 3 gallon camp kettle. It's safe to cook with now. I was sorting out a almost too heavy bag of old files I'd picked up for the steel before they went into the coal shed, wrapping them in plastic bags so they wouldn't rust to nothing. But three of them were in better...

    Rush cutting sickle/knife?

There's several illustrations of just that sort of pan being used as a grisset by little old Whelsh ladies demonstrating how they made dips when they were kids inthe books I have. They were still in fairly common usage in rural Wales well after WW2. Rush lights that is. Unfortunately the...

    Rush cutting sickle/knife?

Aye I've been looking for a suitable donar vessel to use. The nearest I've found so far is a couple of ugly old 1970s stainless steel serving dish things. I could drill holes for legs and use nuts and bolts, rivet on a long handle. But I'd rather get one I could demonstrate with. For the...

    Rush cutting sickle/knife?

You need a cut end to peel from for rush lights and it helps with the overnight soaking. I usually trim both ends before soaking to get the best 12 to 18 inches of rush. What I really want t is a real grisset. We dug a 19th or earlier century sledge hammer head out of the garden years ago...

    Rush cutting sickle/knife?

The Engiish texts mention just soft rushes, juncus effusus and common rushes , juncus conglomerates which grow on sometimes boggy land but not underwater as such. When I've cut them at the height of summer, the grounds been firm and I've held the knife parallel to the ground with my knuckles...
