    Woodlore Knives vs Puukko knives

My introduction to the tools of bushcraft involved the Woodlore-style knife, among others. Later on, I tried out the puuko style of cutting tool, with mixed success. They are more delicate and, as has been mentioned, better for finer work, such as finer carving and food preparation. The...

    45ltr (ish) day pack recommendations

I have both the Jaakari M and L. I would say that the L is brilliant as a winter day pack, in which you might be carrying rather more bulky items, but it also functions incredibly well as a day pack and a rucksack for slightly longer trips out. The frame, back and belt system is superb...

    Time to Update Down Jacket

Quite a few years ago, I bought a Feathered Friends down jacket to keep off winter's chill. I think I have worn it once, maybe twice in the intervening period. I'm sure that down works well in the polar regions and high Himalaya but, in the U.K.'s temperate climate, it is usually too warm and...

    Why no Production Skookum Bushtool

The grinds appear to be the same but it is the blade shape that is subtly different. Don't get me wrong: I really enjoy using both of them; it's just when I have to choose one, it's usually the S30V one. Maybe it does hold its edge for a wee bit longer - I don't know. What I do realise is...

    What are you currently reading?

I was given "The Book of Trespass" for Christmas but haven't started it yet. Currently on the go are "A Rising Man" by Abir Mukherjee and "Orwell's Roses" by Rebecca Solnit. I am really enjoying both for very different reasons!

    Best hiking socks?

I love my Corrymoor socks, which I wear either in my Lundhags or my Altbergs, according to terrain and mood.

    Why no Production Skookum Bushtool

The one for which I always reach is the S30V Rod Garcia Skookum Bush Tool. Of the three, I find it the most useful and serviceable of the lot - a great steel and a great grind. I know that some folk have rolled the edge of a Skookum but, in over ten years of pretty continual use, I've never...

    Why no Production Skookum Bushtool

That mirrors my experience when carving wood and is good to know. Thank you!

    Why no Production Skookum Bushtool

I do. I am lucky enough to have two of Rod Garcia's Skookums, one in 01, the other in S30V, and one of Rob Evans's bushtools in 52100. As I said, they behave differently, though whether that's due to the grind or the steel, I don't know.

    Why no Production Skookum Bushtool

+1 It is strange that, for two knives so similar in appearance, they behave very differently.

    Bushcraft: A Therapeutic Application? 'Survey'

Done. It was interesting to reflect on the reasons why I participate in this fascinating and absorbing activity. On the other hand, trying to articulate that was something of a challenge!

    Projects or goals for 2022

Perhaps stupidly, one of my resolutions for the new year was to make one spoon out of wood every month. I reckon it'll give me a chance to play with different designs and timbers as well as boosting the stock of wooden implements in the house. Trouble is, we're approaching the half-way point...

New Ray Mears knife with marked blade

This seems to be getting rather heated and ugly. I think the key to it all is what Coach said: "Emberleaf ... responded immediately asking me to return the knife so that they could identify and correct any problem that might exist." As Woodlore are really only the agents, they probably were...

New Ray Mears knife with marked blade

Have you tried sending the pictures and your observations to Emberleaf themselves? As the makers, they should (a) know what has happened and (b) be able to suggest a remedy. It might be worth a try.

    'Eco-friendly' alternative to 3in1 oil?

I don't know about its environmental credentials but Ballistol Klever - a German general purpose oil - might be worth considering.

Hill People Gear 'UMLINDI' pack - in-depth review after full season of hiking etc.

It was the compression system that perplexed me, something that is yet more baffling on the much larger qui-Ya, with which I had a brief flirtation. They are good packs, no doubt about that, but I prefer mine to be more straightforward and thus easier to use. The west of Scotland experiences...

Hill People Gear 'UMLINDI' pack - in-depth review after full season of hiking etc.

Time and experience are stern tutors! Having waxed lyrical about the Umlindi in my earlier post, I have to admit that I have now sold it on and gone for an alternative 'ultimate' daysack. My reasons? Well, there is no denying the extraordinary comfort of the pack: it really did carry...
