    LK 35 Rucksack

There's a cordura one on eBay for $300! At that price, I think I'll pass or buy a new, comfortable Savotta pack.

    Asymmetrical pear spoon

The grain on that is stunning! The shape is lovely too.

    LK 35 Rucksack

I've often looked at these and wondered whether they're worth a tout but now it seems that finding one - preferably a cordura one, rather than canvas - in half-decent condition is next to impossible. Have I missed the boat or does someone know from where I might obtain one?

    Sigg

I remember having a lacquered one for drinks and an unlacquered one for the Trangia meths. I've still got my drinks one, though it is battered, dented and scarred by being my chosen water bottle on nearly every hill and mountain I have climbed. Quite what happened to my fuel one, I don't know...

    Polycotton Tarps ?

Polyester is added to the cotton to make the fabric a little lighter, quicker drying and to prevent the tarp or whatever from stretching. There is also the idea that it resists sparks from the fire rather better than any synthetic tarp - hence the interest in them from the bushcraft community...

Boots - pure leather Vs membrane?

Here's another shout out for Lundhags. I have tried the all-leather-versus-membrane-boots thing and still come back to Lundhags, mostly because their foot shape suits me down to a tee. I was wary of having my foot encased in rubber initially but, in use, my worries were unfounded. Ultimately...

    Lion Steel

It sounds as though Lion Steel wins the day. I might as well 'add to cart' and see what happens...

    Lion Steel

The two offered by Heinnie look the part but are priced just a little too high for my liking. I'm never sure about blades that have holes in them, either - one of the reasons I've never got on with Spyderco's offerings. Thank you anyway for the suggestion.

    Lion Steel

I hate to admit it, but I haven't 'done the deal' - yet. I was distracted by this alternative to the Lion Steel Bestman. As before, I was wondering if anyone had any experience of it and whether it would be a good or better alternative: https://heinnie.com/benchmade-318-proper-green-micarta/...

    French press obsession?

Aren't we hearty bushcraft folk supposed to use the coffee drop method of preparing our preferred brew?

Recommendations for gear to start my bushcraft journey!

The things that I would never leave home without include my Savotta Jaakari L pack, my stainless steel Crusader cup, a firesteel, my Silky Pocket Boy saw (the longer one...), a small 'cuts kit' and my knife . The last is, perhaps, the bottomless pit of bushcraft and everyone has a variety of...

    Lion Steel

It all sounds very positive! Thanks, all, for your input. I think I will click on that dreaded button...

    Lion Steel

I made the mistake of skimming through the U.K.-friendly folding knife section on the Heinnie website and came across a Lion Steel folder that appeals on grounds of aesthetics as well as steel choice and so on. I know nothing about the maker and was wondering whether their knives are good, bad...

    Crusader cup mk2

Mark 1 infinitely better than Mark 2! Better material, better made, better capacity and just so much more practical.

    What is your sleepwear?

If I remember to pack it in the rucksack, I'll wear a Norgee shirt but, generally, I'm not too fussed about changing to sleep. The prospect of getting cold and then having to warm up again in the sleeping bag seems a bit of a faff to me. Obviously, if my trousers are soaking or covered in mud...

    Strapping kit to a rucksack?

Just to add a little more grist to the mill, I walked along the Offa's Dyke footpath, an eleven-day backpacking jaunt, using the Sabre 45 + pockets. It worked brilliantly, allowing me to carry everything I needed and nothing I didn't. It was in summer but it proved the versatility of the pack...

    Expedition Blades

Did any issues arise with any of the knives during your 14 days in Canada? Was the primary function of the knife as a survival tool or was it just a useful cutting accessory 'on the list'?

    Strapping kit to a rucksack?

For an overnighter, your Sabre 45 should be OK for capacity. If you feel the need for extra capacity, the side pockets for it are really good: they attach securely and you can, as Paul Kirtley has demonstrated, carry a weeks food in one, leaving you room for 'luxuries' in the main pack. Having...

    Why no Production Skookum Bushtool

I have to admit to using my S30V version regularly, particularly when I'm carving or working with wood. I like the directness and apparent simplicity of its design and Rod Garcia did a very fine job in making it. It seems to have become a bit like the Alan Wood Woodlore in terms of folk...

    Ridge Line Material

In theory, it should work. The greater the difference between the two, the better the prussik will work because it has the opportunity to 'bite' into the ridge line or whatever ,ore successfully. Of course, there is a flip side: if you tighten or load a skinny prussik around a thicker cord...
