    LARGE COMFORTABLE BACKPACK RECOMMENDATIONS

It's worth remembering that pack volume/capacity does not always mean you're carrying great weights: some items - sleeping bags in particular - can take up a considerable amount of space and still weigh - well, less than a small elephant. For example, I have a synthetic winter bag, which gets...

    Bison Axes - cheap November!

I've taken the plunge and added an Oberharzer to cart. It looks a useful tool. Although probably not necessary here, I'll give some feedback once I've got it and tried it out. As ever, Erbswurst, your detailed knowledge of where they come from and their general history were both interesting...

    Roselli axe

So it is, in essence, more maul than axe. That's useful to know. I've ordered one with the shorter handle, purely for splitting purposes. I'll be interested to see how - or even if - it works for me. I'd imagine that, due to the head's obtuse angle, anything other than splitting will require...

    Roselli axe

It looks as though it's quite useful when choked up but splitting certainly seems to be its forte. Given that I usually use a saw to process wood rather than an axe, I might give one a try, just to see if it's a worthy splitter. I like its quirky appearance and might find that I end up liking...

    Smock questions for fellow users

The drop liner makes the garment waterproof. It's a good top: beautifully made, clever use of Ventile, well-cut and eminetly practical - and I don't particularly like smocks! I've had mine for about a year and somehow it has become my 'go-to' garment for pretty much everything.

If you had no ties and money wasn’t an issue, where would you move to?

There's nothing wrong with winter, even if it is an extended one with snow, ice and very cold temperatures. Summer is, in my opinion, overrated: it is generally just a tired, sweaty season in which the days are far too long...

    Larger carving axes?

The tool should be doing the majority of the work, rather than you. I know it sounds a bizarre thing to say but there is truth in it! Inevitably, the sharpness of your axe is key: is it sharp enough? If so, and I assume that it is if you're carving fruit wood (i.e. cherry), then it might be...

    Larger carving axes?

I used to have a Gransfors carving axe but found it too heavy for sustained use. The longer cutting edge was certainly useful but wielding the thing for a prolonged time meant that my carving became wayward and inaccurate. After a pause, I was put on to the Kalthoff carving axe - light in...

If you had no ties and money wasn’t an issue, where would you move to?

There's a lot that's familiar to me down where I work in rural Gloucestershire but I think I'd head home to Sutherland, on the west coast.

    Human Tent Pole

It's the same principle that's used in group shelters: you and your fellow sufferers grab the edge of the shelter and then, in a seamless, coordinated effort(!), lift it up and over yourselves, sitting down on the edge. The fabric gets held in place by as many 'poles' as you have and it's...

    Woolpower 400 and 600 jackets

I've got a 400 and it is brilliant when one is 'living' outdoors, rather than just 'out for the day'. I also learned that, unless you are in full-on winter conditions on the Cairngorm plateau and wearing a shell layer on top, even the 400 can be very warm; however, I do run hot. There are...

    LARGE COMFORTABLE BACKPACK RECOMMENDATIONS

+1 for this. I have a couple of their Jaakaari range, including the XL, which is an external framed sack of the volume you're after. On initial inspection, the shoulder straps can seem quiet hard and unyielding but, like the car seats on most German and Scandinavian vehicles, they prove to be...

    Fjallraven - Kaipack G1000 Jacket

If you wash it using Nikwax Cottonproof and follow the instructions, that should improve things on the proofing front. None of the Fjallraven jackets in the many iterations of G1000 are waterproof - merely showerproof. If they - and you - do get soaked through, it does at least dry very...
