    Carved my 2nd spoon tonight

Thanks folks! You're right Fraxinus, hollowing out the bowl was awkward with the Mora. I used the point of the blade to inscribe the inner oval shape for the bowl, then carved out a couple of millimetres of wood then did it again. The Victorinox was the right size for scraping and smoothing the...

    Damp

Assuming you don't have a leak, condensation is likely the cause of the problem. To minimise the problem you need to look at (a) minimising the generation of water vapour, e.g. do not dry clothes indoors as it can puts litre of water into the air depending on how much clothes you are drying; (b)...

    Carved my 2nd spoon tonight

Hi Folks, Having carved my first spoon (and a spatula) back in October, I decided to have a go at carving a second, smaller one. So tonight, while my other half was watching Masterchef, I spread out a groundsheet in the living room to catch the shavings, and started on my new project. To my...

Suspicious film on surface of vinegar of pickles

I don't know if this will be helpful Tengu but I have just retrieved this from a dusty corner of my old and feeble brain. I remember learning something about acetic acid spoilage in the dim and distant past. Acetic acid is the principal acid in vinegar. One of the symptoms of acetic acid...

This is probably a silly question, but can some kind person tell me - what is the advantage of having a red light setting on a head torch? Ta in advance.

    Traditional Winter fixed basecamp gear!

Hi Clouston, apologies for being late with this comment. That is a lovely set of gear you've got. A couple of years ago I bought a new jacket and rucksack, both Berghaus. My selection was based on what I (as a newbie) thought was good quality and value for money. However, the more I see this...

UK legal every day carry multitool - the perfect solution.

I'm not trying to hijack this thread but, having read the above comments, I'm hoping these questions will add to the discussion. What about Opinel knives, which are fitted with the twisting lock mechanism, are they legal in the UK? And if they are, what about Opinel No.8 and upwards which seem...

    Bread and dripping

When I was a kid I've very very occasionally have bread and dripping for my school lunch. Otherwise it was bread and margarine. We were quite poor so only had roast meat every second blue moon :)

    Dinner

I have made flaky pastry in the past and it turned out fine (all that folding and rolling) but no, not this time, I used one call 'Jus-Rol'. Brushed it liberally with egg yolk (just the yoke, no white).

    Your best poundland bargain.

A few months ago I bought 60 feet (I think) of nylon washing line for 99p. It's very strong, plenty strong enough for pitching a tarp or as guy-lines etc. Also bought 30feet of nylon rope, made from 3 sealed strands so if I wanted to, I could make 3x30 feet of cordage from it again 99p. Six...

    Dinner

Hi Folks, OK this is not about bushcraft or cooking outdoors but I thought I share this with you. I work from home (and only part-time) so I have it easy, but my dearly beloved works in a plant nursery - physical, tiring work - so, when I can, pretty much every day in fact, I like to have a...

    Made myself a cracket!

Well done Clouston98, that looks great. One of the reasons I'm going to get a barrel-auger (eventually) is to do projects just like this. You've just given me further encouragement. May I ask, what diameter auger did you use?
