What do you wish you had known?

On walks and on solo camps even to camp-sites one thing that helps a lot is having somewhere comfortable to sit. A fallen tree or stout log is great if you can find them but in my experience, I seldom do! So I bring one of those three-legged folding chairs.

"The Rough Ways" - bushcraft race.

I can relate to that. I have a photo somewhere that shows me and the three others in my team that won a regional orienteering competition, all proudly holding up our medals. I would have relished this race back then. Nowadays I come down the stairs using both feet on each step while I wait for...

    Seagull Tikka Masala!

Makes you wonder. Supposing they are right, how can this vat of curry sauce be left in a location where a seagull can get at it. It must be outdoors and open which is what they suggest. I wonder how many rodents, insects, bird**** or airborne dirt have ended up it in. It sounds like they are...

Advice needed - old leather satchel

Hi Folks, This is not really a bushcraft question but since I know there are some very skilled and experienced leather workers on here, it seemed like the best place to come for advice. Whilst having a bit of a clear-out, I happened upon a leather satchel that I bought in Greece maybe 35+...

what useless kit have you bought?

I paid £5 for a piece of wire that you attach to the end of a stick to use as a fork to grill a sausage over a fire. I could have made 6 from an old coat hanger. Besides, who wants to grill one sausage at a time ..... doh!

    Wasn't Expecting That!!

Lovely dog but scary under the circumstances, appearing out of the darkness like that. That would have scared me, I was bitten when I was a kid and I've always been a bit wary of big dogs since.

    Severe rat infestation

We have a rat issue along our garden hedge and we used to get the council pest control officer to come out and put poison down. Your local council will almost certainly have a pest control officer who can help with eradication (only works temporarily) or with advice on poison. Over the past year...

Traditional butchery, with very little waste.

I had to go to the main page of the blog, then page down a little to find that blog entry. It's just great to see how they seem to process every part of the animal. [As Scott Rea says (worth a look on YouTube) "you can eat every part of a pig except the squeal"]. I love the specialised old...

    Using your produce?

How do you dry the vegetables, Toddy? Is there an advantage in drying versus freezing? (I suppose it saves space in the freezer?)

    Show us your sheds!

I can't show you pictures of my shed because I haven't got one! I have been known to clamp an old bread board to the kitchen worktop to use as a work bench (and I'm not joking!). But I'm planning to either buy one or build one this year. Thanks knifeman for starting this thread and also those...
