I use riggers gloves like these for any heavy work where I want to protect my hands: http://www.screwfix.com/p/keep-safe-superior-rigger-gloves-black-yellow-large/37195 I find them great value for money.

I like the string idea. Maybe use a piece of paracord or bank line that you intend to use with the tarp anyway, and tie two knots in it to give you the correct length. That way you are not carrying anything extra.
