    Baofeng Fanboys & Fan Girls

You've either got a copy or a defective item, Nagoyas are by no means high end but they out perform stock Baofeng by every metric, more markedly on 2M than & 70cm but definitely, on both bands.

    Are you a coffee head?

I even use it at home, where I have a proper DeLonghi espresso/steamer machine.

I got one of these doohickeys in my Christmas stocking a couple of years back.

The man who has lived as a hermit for 40 years

I always suspected that the chap in this news story just fancied a few days peace & quiet in the outdoors. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-york-north-yorkshire-54072508 And I do have one from my own experience, about 20 years ago, I took a trip with the then Mrs. to the Mournes in...

The man who has lived as a hermit for 40 years

I found it interesting that few, if any, of the practicalities of his daily life were touched upon. Rather you got to see a very spiritual and aesthetic view of a life off-grid. Before and during watching I was definitely onside with him staying in the cabin, upon reflection afterwards though...

Uk knives from the 1980’s onwards, how thing change

I actually ended up with a Tramontina bowie, which was about a tenner from a shop in a local seaside resort. Being now the owner of several 'name' knives and even a couple of handcrafted ones, I can honestly say it's one of the sharpest 'out of the box' blades I've ever owned. Lost it when my...

    Repair patches

You seldom see anything cut-up-able in charity shops these days, not fit to wear goes to those rag collection places. I'm loathe to cut up something that people could be wearing. It's a point though, should I come upon anything that's been totally wrecked.

    Repair patches

Anyone know where I could get some squares of of polycotton or similar material in green/forest friendly colours for patching up worn or torn outdoor clothing? Have the stick on stuff for sleeping bags and down jackets, have a few bits of MVP and appropriate glue but I can't find any plain...

    Amateur Radio Operators, Beginners Advice?

Used to be said that by the letter of the 'law' in the UK, the only things you could talk about were your station and the weather.

Thanks but I have a bit myself, use it with flints.

    Fire pistons, what's "the knack"?

    Practically every time.

    Fire pistons, what's "the knack"?

Yes, vaseline and every other thing the videos, the sales people and the instructors at meets tell you to do, and on occasion have done for me and just handed me the piston to whack... Nada, ever. Really think it's time just to let them go, too many injuries!

    Fire pistons, what's "the knack"?

I've just smacked my thumb on the worktop while trying again and I'll be surprised if I don't lose the nail, going by the colouration. I've lived without them for 50 odd years, I think I might get by on the other firelighting methods I have at my disposal.

    Fire pistons, what's "the knack"?

For nigh on twenty years now I've been trying (on & off!) to use a fire piston. I've had several, given (or thrown) all away. Just got another as part of a kit, modern metal one, and after a morning of trying, again all I have is a sore wrist. I've asked online and in person many times and the...
