    Ray Mears W/S woodlore

I must admit that I preferred the dimensions of the WS over my Alan Wood original for my big hands. I also preferred the weight of the micarta over the maple. I’m still really in two minds but it doesn’t get used & I can think of far better uses for £500 or more.

    Ray Mears W/S woodlore

I have come to the painful conclusion that I need a new engine for my van more than I need my W/S woodlore. I had the original Alan Wood version too at one time, but let it go instead of the Wilkinson Sword because I prefer the weight & feel of the Micarta. I haven’t seen one for sale for a...

    Magpie - Edible ?

Sounds just like my Gran. She was a brilliant cook until her sense of taste & smell disappeared in her 80s. After that any meal she cooked was a complete lottery!

    WANTED Early Plastic artefacts

I used to have a gutta percha golf ball in my bits box. Not sure if it’s still there but I’ll check & you can have it if it is.

    Bakers Bread Rasp

That’s the preference north of the Border. I like my bread “well-fired” too.

    Kendal Festival

The mountain festival is still good fun. We usually host one of the “secret sessions” at my bar & they’ve had some interesting guests. It’s good if you’re into walking/climbing/mountain biking & adding to your kitheap. I hosted the Patagonia after party last year which was a bit wild!! Plenty to...

The Merits of Scones, Cream and Jam

So round these parts Scone rhymes with gone, but in our family with dad from North East & mum from home counties it was pronounced to rhyme with stone. Potentially there is some justification in pronouncing it to rhyme with noon in line with the pronunciation of the Scottish stone of Scone...

    What did you buy today?

Happy for you. My opinion of Morrison’s scones may be biased by my 20 years as a baker.

    What did you buy today?

A decent fruit scone from Morrisons? I can taste the salt & baking powder already! Absolutely horrid. Only scones worth eating are fresh from the oven with butter and real strawberry ( or potentially blackcurrant ) jam. If it’s a fruit scone you don’t really need jam; just butter. If you really...

Buy once/ last a lifetime / indestructible clothing

In the same vein as your Carhartt jacket I love my Dickies canvas dungarees. Super tough & really comfortable even in hot weather. Also loads of pockets to stash essential items in.

    Hot weather survival

We bought one during the heat two years ago & used it a lot. Then invested( ? ) in an inflatable hot tub at a closing down sale so now we can fill it from the hosepipe and get four people in there to chill off at a time. In the winter we’ll deflate it & pack it away. Having that amount of just...

Government consultation on banning large knives and machetes

Obviously this is ( to us at least ) common sense, but it seems clearly that all that is required of any new knife legislation is a heavy sentence for possession with intent to commit further offences of fear or violence with the item concerned. That and better education of police officers and...

    Anyone know anything about Temu.com?

Have used Temu a couple of times. All seems good. Crazy cheap to get established & then will probably put prices up a bit at least. The quality of the stuff I had has been good generally although mostly catty tube & badges. A lot of the knives I’ve seen look truly awful. Seems to be very like...

    Thrudark

I think it may well have been a batch problem with your Alpha. I bought one secondhand about 17 years ago & it still looks bomb proof. The only issue it has had is the taping is now becoming detached from the seams. Must try & get it repaired because it looks easily capable of another 17 years.

What bit of your kit is a keeper?

Nope. Me too. In my case some vintage Sheffield kfs with those Ivorine handles & 3 prong forks. They just feel nice to eat with.

Trip Report A Hike and Wild Camp with canvas and wool kit

Thanks for posting that. Made good watching & I like your style. I should try tarp camping. Three or four of those ponchos should cover me I think!!

What bit of your kit is a keeper?

I have a Snowpeak titanium fork & spoon set I bought in a sale donkeys years ago which I’d never part with. I never got on with Sporks: I like my proper cutlery for eating and not keen on the feel of wood in my mouth. They are a real luxury on a hike but weigh almost nothing. I even bought...

    Kit weight

I’d also dump the hawk. If you really need the extra oomph maybe baton with a slightly bigger knife. Tripod and big power bank as has been said already. A dry bag filled with spare clothes etc makes a nice alternative to a tripod for long exposures & a couple of small power banks will keep you...
