Help me find some new music

Are you already hip to Scott Bradley’s Post Modern Jukebox? A mishmash of musicians and songs in an electro swing style. I’m a big fan. Also try Wulfpeck. Modern, current, original and brilliant musicians.

Wanted Gransfors Bruks Scandinavian Forest Axe, LP maker

I had the really tiny hatchet made by LP. It was flawless. Unfortunately I also found it useless for my huge hands so it had to go.

    Faux Gras

Real foie gras is very pink & super smooth. I guess you could push it through a fine sieve to make it smooth. I rather like the look of it but I was a bit curious as to why they called it after foie gras. It doesn’t really look like it & I doubt it tastes like it either. Sounds like it would...

    Trapping, numbers game

One of the issues with the US series seemed to be with other critters stealing the trapped bunnies from the snares. Success seemed to be strongly associated with taking down something big with a bow and then working out how to protect and preserve the meat from the critters mentioned above!

    Faux Gras

Sounds lovely! Not sure it has any resemblance to actual pâté de foie gras though. It’s from an excellent chef though. One of the best dinners I have ever eaten was at Restaurant Gauthier in Soho for my 40th birthday. They do a “herbivore” menu and an “omnivore” menu, although many of the plant...

    Budget belly busters

On the original belly busting theme, I like to make a “Shepherds Pie” with whatever cooked meat comes to hand and the usual additions; peas, carrots, onions etc. To make it go a bit further I also add a pouch of beluga lentils ( from Lidl ) and a tin of budget baked beans. Top with mash ( and...

    Budget belly busters

Bananas & parsnips bizarrely share several flavour modifiers according to a slightly too detailed taste-matching manual I have. Certainly when roasted there is a distinct similarity but not enough to use as a substitute as far as I am concerned.

    Ugly stik rod?

Plus one for Rigged & Ready here in Kendal. They are keen fishers themselves & will be happy to give you any advice you need.

    Anyone know this knife?

Also lots more of the usual silence about legal carry and lawful reason to carry a bladed article. Seems like it’s a PR thing the Home Office & police forces trot out every now & then to make it look like they have a plan to stop knife crime.

    Ray Mears W/S woodlore

I see when you post them together. It looks much slimmer than my W/S.

    Back on the tools

After two spoons from the windfall willow I realise that I’ve forgotten most of what I knew about carving and that I need to spend a few hours honing and stropping this weekend before putting the finishing cuts on them. I’ll be looking back at those old YT how to videos with Barn the Spoon to...

    Knife making Tuition?

Looks promising. I must point out that I would be trying to set this up with Dave Budd if I lived nearer but it’s pretty much a day travelling to get there. I love my axe that I forged but want to try a kitchen knife.

    Knife making Tuition?

Thanks for the suggestion. Not to be disparaging but I really want to forge my own blade(s) rather than use a grinder to get the form. It’s as much for the fun of forging as the end result. Cheers, Simon

    Knife making Tuition?

Hi all. I’m looking for a good one or two day knife making course in the North of England. I went & forged an axe with Dave Budd & totally loved it. Now I want to do one or ideally two kitchen knives for myself in high carbon steel & use some Jabroc for the handles. It’s a six-eight hour drive...

    Back on the tools

Big thanks to Kepis for posting a willow spoon earlier in the week. Our willow lost a branch a while ago in the storms and I got inspired to go and cut a few pieces to carve. I have some lovely knives, but haven’t used them for ages so apologies to Ben Orford, Nic Westerman & Alf Branch for...

    Rustic Willow Eater

Thanks for this. Inspired me to get the tools out again after a very long break. Our willow lost a branch in the wind & I have nabbed some bits to try. Cheers, Simon
