    Watering system for Greenhouse

When I go away for a week I just sit them in trays of water. Tends not to cause any issues until fruiting (when they can split). Did exactly that last week and came back to triffids.

    What are you growing?

How’s everyone getting on this year? I’m growing tomatoes, cucumbers (need much bigger pots), and lots of soft fruit.

What beekeeping related activities did you do recently?

We had a nice prime swarm land in some of our equipment on Saturday. A lovely marked Buckfast queen that someone will definitely be missing. It was a slow start to the season, but everything is kicking off now. We manage around 15 apiary sites, so rushing to get round them all before they...

    Incubating poultry

Morning. It has been an interesting journey with the quail. From the four we initially hatched, three turned out to be cocks. As soon as they reached sexual maturity they started fighting, quickly leading to the death of one (it happened to quickly and was a blood bath). After that I separated...

However, late afternoon I get a call from my wife to say they are both collapsed outside...

    Incubating poultry

Well, success! 4 of the 8 have hatched so far. The first two have been moved into the brooder. I have put stones in the drinker as I have read quail chicks are excellent at drowning themselves.

    Incubating poultry

I have one for my bees: an Rcom Insect 70. It has adjustable heat, so I assume it should be fine for the job?

I have been inspired. I have just ordered 6 fertilised quail eggs. I’m looking forward to having a go at hatching them. I’m going to go and pick up some plywood now and start making a brooder and hutch.

    Aquarium owners.

Yes, trying to pull them off usually just adds to the problem. When threatened they produce lots of babies that are released into the tank, compounding the problem. The Filefish is my backup option. It’s definitely a good shout. I introduced a few Peppermint Shrimp, but they disappeared...
