    Hair cleaning on the trail.

I never use shampoo. The most my longish hair gets is a dousing in water and I find that works well. Out on the trail I wouldn't bother unless you found a water source and then you could give it a quick soaking.

    Grenfell Cloth

Very interesting. Yes, John, Grenfell is a twill weave. I have an old GC jacket which I rescued from a boot sale. It sops up water like a sponge! Very different from ventile. Windproof though.

    Windproof smock

I have a Survival Aids single ventile wind proof top which weighs 440g. I reckon that is about as light as ventile can go. Is it too heavy? Suppose it is by modern synthetic standards. Very breathable though and deals with showers well.

Is single layer ventile waterproof; is double layer breathable?

Single ventile is not waterproof. But, combined with a wool base layer, it manages rain pretty well. Water will come through it but it dries pretty fast and is very breathable. Epic works in a similar way except its silicone fibre coating repels more water initially but it will eventually come...

    Walking for weight loss

I have entirely the opposite approach. I would go mad, I think, if I had something blaring into my ear on a walk. I prefer to be entertained by what I see and hear out there. I also don't like setting goals and deadlines. Neither way is right or wrong of course. Vive la difference!

    Walking for weight loss

The equation is simple: burn more calories than you put in and you lose weight. The psychology is more complicated. Its good that you have found a form of exercise you enjoy as there is more chance of keeping it up over the longer term. My advice is up the exercise gradually and make sure that...

    Vigil for Skadi

Very sorry to read this. My memory of her was one time at Rough Close when you rigged up something with her lead which allowed her free-ish rein without being able to get too close to the fire. My best to you and Debs.

    Bushcraft Beginner

Sounds like you are adopting the sensible approach - easy does it, take things gradually, step by step, don't be in a rush to learn too many new skills at once. The Bushmoot would be an excellent introduction for you and your son.
