    Best hiking socks?

Darn Tough! I prefer them low-cut. So, I use no-see running socks when hiking in preferred trail runners (which is mostly Altras) during summer, and low cut cushioned hiking socks in winter. My earlier practice was Smartwool medium-cushion c/w liner socks. I still like this option if I am...

What's the deal with sleeping bag comfort ratings?

Isn't this the same reason you don't put your head in your bag when you're sleeping in the cold? It just gets wet in there and when your metabolism slows during sleep everything cools too much and you are enveloped in cold, wet, even freezing air.

What's the deal with sleeping bag comfort ratings?

A lot depends on how old you are, how hydrated and well-fed, too. Booze doesn't help . But mainly, being properly insulated from the ground and having something keeping the wind off is significant. I always thought ratings indicated only that you won't die at these named temperatures if you...

    Shackleton's 'Endurance' found

No, not the discovery of a new type of Viagra. They found the ship that Shackleton and his crew had to abandon and then paddle the unlikely distance across the Weddell Sea to a remote islands in the hope of being picked up (some many months later, it turned out). Odd it should bob to the...

    Michael May knives?

If you go to his site and look at the lambsfoot he has there. See the point on the spine of the knife where the blade meets the spring? See there's no gap? Kind of a quality sign. Other things might let the piece down - walk/talk, scales etc. of course - and I should say that I have some beezer...

    Where, oh where ?

Anywhere in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland ... :) Mind, there's lots of people heading there and prices are creeping up. A friend of mine bought a smallholding in NS about ten years ago. He was on holiday there. Had a credit card with a $3000 dollars on it. Just bought it. Staggeringly, weak at the...

Preparing for troubled times ahead - Advice on what is needed.....

FWI - Guy on the radio just said to Kyiv, stock up water in containers. Stock up food that will keep. Bandages. Plastic sheet for burns treatment. Reduce fragmentation by taping windows or putting up net curtain. The very basics, he said. I was just downtown on a corner waiting to cross the...

    Which one is best……..

I was recently introduced (by a fine person on another channel) to the delights and wonders of the Guernsey sweater. Bought a 2nd hand one off the eBay for a tryout - a Navy Le Tricoteur. It is much better at blocking the wind that your ordinary sweater. It has closer worsted type weave. And is...

    Which one is best……..

Mine's a mixed bunch but I mainly do wool for the smelliness of synthetics on day 2. Synthetics wick/dry quicker thoe. So, for big exertions in the warm for a day, I do go that way. Don't over specialize. Also, what they say about cotton being no good is true. At best, it's clammy, gets...

    What did you buy today?

Knew the term, obvs, but didn't know this about it :) "Within the military, it is widely known as an ‘egg banjo’ because when it is eaten, egg yolk usually squirts onto the eater's shirt/jacket, typically resulting in the person raising their sandwich out of the way, to approximately ear...

    Blacksmith tool question

If you just heat the back of the blade (with the edge facing upwards) you can get the colours to change close to the edge ... a differential heat treat. I remember seeing this done on a kitchen stove with a slightly bigger piece than you have there. At least, I think that's what was going on. I...
