    YOYTi. (Why titanium?)

Funny that. Ti mugs always manage to sear away portions of my mouth and tongue, but not SS - at least not the dinged old Tatonka I've carted for 20 years :) Never mind. I don't think I have ever taken a hot drink straight from an ally mug.

    YOYTi. (Why titanium?)

there, in a nutshell. the heat transfer is just too efficient pretty on a knife though, where a few grams shaved does make a real deftness difference ... and you can get some pretty and colourful effects on it

    What are you currently reading?

Just finished listening to the BBC Hordern/Briers 'Jeeves' recordings. 15 plus hours of delicious. Back to paper now and Maurice O'Sullivan's Twenty Years A-Growing; one of the Blasket Island novels

    EDC Pens?

Took me a while to realize that I had settled on things some time ago. Parker Sonnet fountain pens. An ideal working pen for what I do (grading, report writing etc.). I have a Parker Cisele ballpoint pen and (a recent addition) a Rotring 800 pen. And for the pocket, Fisher x750s. Was big on the...

    Best Bushcraft Knife to Buy?

I very much like the Brisa 95mm Trappers and 85mm Elvers as sorted-out outdoors knives. The O1 Trappers I particularly like. And, I have a marginal preference for the flat ground versions (which are plentifully robust), over the scandi ground versions (which are more conventionally what you...

    Sentimental EDC

I have a bit of amber I bought in a run down antique shop in Margate. I keep it in my pencil case. Also a coffee spoon. It attached itself to me rather than vice versa, but I do find it endlessly useful for all sorts of things, which occasionally includes stirring sugar into coffee.

    What did you buy today?

Excellent :) I pressed Pay Now on a Paramo Velez smock from Foothills. Just got to wait for it to show up now. I am anxious about this one, as I have been faffing about and not buying one for maybe three years. Couldn't decide between the light and the regular versions. I know what that usually...

Woolly Pully vs Fleece vs Ranger Shirt as Mid-Layer?

You could take a look at the lightweight insulation layers made by Patagonia or Arcteryx - 100/200 wt fleeces, down 'sweaters', artificial fibre versions of same. Many options there as starting points. Haglofs, Helly Hansen etc, etc offer more affordable options. If you are looking for a...

    Limited Canned Goods.

Re. cans specifically, I know this sounds weird and contrarian, but I think that I'd keep to very highly-flavoured stuff and ingredients for making sauces. Things like smoked sprats, anchovies (in fact canned fish in general), chipotle peppers in adobo, very good quality tomatoes/tomato paste...

    EDC - Money

Slightly OTT, but maybe not so much: When covid hit and a few of my friends became lost to me, one of things I noticed was they started to talk about gold a lot. Buying it in ounces. Buying safes for under the bed. There were queues outside the gold dealers' places. it was a thing. Of course...

Help me get my pack weight down

Getting packweight down is a kind of chiselling exercise once you have got the mechanics of the trip (cooking, sleeping, first aid, waterproofing etc.) sorted out. Slightly lighter cup, slightly lighter tarp, slightly lighter sleeping bag, less water and so on. More of a mind-set than a set of...

Are GPS units really necessary these days?

I have Garmin Oregon thing, which I use. Runs on AAs. I have never yet trusted myself to go with just the iPhone. I think I would just be pretty anxious about it. Got a paper map though, so maybe not. :)

    Car sleeping?

It is totally do-able in a car. I did it with my parents as a kid. My partner did with her family too. So, when it came to us and our own kids, we had a clue. Essentially the approach was to take some small tents (everyone who wants their own room can have it). Reverse the 4wd up to a camp table...
