    Cooking out with the firedragon

Tony - rather than do that (and end up with melted and half-burnt plastic) why not just cut chunks off the block of fuel and burn a chunk at a time?

    Cooking out with the firedragon

I used it how I described; obviously if the water is colder, it will take more heat to bring to the boil. Still, I think it performed very well. I was impressed. For weekend summer trips it is a very good option. Simpler and cheaper by far than most gas systems, more compact than a trangia...

A non-EU custom charges tale (beware!)

It is often pointed out to people that the best prices for (manufactured abroad) knives are to be found in shops like Hennie Haynes. The import duties are why their prices are higher than the $ prices. Getting a retailer or maker in another country to try to sneak past customs could put them in...

Advice request for cordless tools for around the place.

I have a Ryobi drill which has been used and abused. It is still going very strong and I think it is a good tool for the money. Spent about £100 on it over 10 years ago, so not a bargain basement tool. Batteries are now starting to show their age but that is really good going considering the abuse.

    Balinese Blaka

That is an interesting blade. Very thick! Is the edge hollow-ground?

    Cooking out with the firedragon

Unable to find my home-made meths stove and wanting something cheap and compact, I bought a firedragon stove and fuel http://bcbin.com/product/firedragon-folding-cooker-mk-ii/ I got the fuel from Cotswolds camping who incidentally are one of the cheapest sources at £2.50 for 6 blocks. 3 blocks...

Argh, yes, should have forearm up to intersect that brake kickback plate.

Roundwood timber framing mortise and tenon

That was interesting, Kris. When I was young, I was taught to build post and rail fences with tenon joints - each rail passed through the post and was squared off with an asymmetric scarf so it overlapped with the adjacent rail. Made for a very strong fence. This was with round posts and rails...

Grease and grit horns and probably a strickle

How do you use the strickle? Draw away from the edge? I have a sickle, not tried peening it, just used a bit of wet and dry wrapped round a dowel.

    Wild Camping "Full Time" Possible?

I know nothing about fishing, other than when I see people fishing it seems to take a long time to catch anything. To rely on it as a source of food whilst also walking long distances each day would seem to be contradictory. How about planning the walk over summer months and working the winter...

    Wool shirts for office wear

You are going to boil in wool - most offices are around 21-25C (effing ridiculous temperaturesIMO). Cotton is sensible, easy to wash and cool.

    Question for the smithies!

The question about a surform is "why bother?" What is a surform for? Shaping a 'random' shape, correct? Rapid removal of material that can't be done easily with a saw or a plane. In the past you would just use an adze for that. A skilled person with an adze has no difficulty doing that shaping...

My wife of 16 years passed away tonight.

I can only imagine how numb and strange you must be feeling, the whole world has changed in an instant, never to be the same again. Condolences.

    Best ways to backup

Depends on how much space you need. Dropbox is free up to about a terabyte.

Bike trailers post up pictures of yours

Looks solid. I suggest adding a safety rope, just in case that hitch gets jarred loose. A short length of cord would do.

    New saw

I've heard that recent opinels are not so good. I have an older one and it is pretty decent - blade thins to towards the top so it doesn't jam. Apparently newer ones are just flat.

    First Aid and children

I did first aid at age 11/12. Back then it covered CPR, treating cuts, burns, bruises, sprains, making improvised sprints, bandages slings and treating snakebite.
