    Splinter

I wouldn't bother with the paste; splinters from pressure treated timber will generate a fair amount of pus pretty quickly and that will push the splinter out. If the pressure gets too much under your fingernail, melt a hole through with a heated needle. BTDTGTT

    Barely legal EDC?

I said 'does not guarantee'. If you look up those court cases, in the second one the judge initially dismissed the charges. It was only on appeal and the presentation of the ministerial discussions of what 'readily foldable' meant that Deegan (sp?) was found guilty. Something like a friction...

    Barely legal EDC?

UK law is always open to interpretation and argument. So, say someone is stopped by an officer while carrying the knife mentioned by the OP. The police officer doesn't think that the knife is allowed for general carry and charges the person carrying it. CPS agrees and it ends up in court. The...

    Question regarding knife carry

For pete's sakes, this is a young person we are talking about. Are you bunch seriously suggesting that they risk getting a caution or a record over such a trivial thing? You lot walk around with knives on your belts if you want. That's your choice. The law is ambiguous, for the sake of...

    Question regarding knife carry

To the original poster, please note that Janne does not live in the UK (and has a flea in his ear about the laws in the UK). Pack your knife in your bag. It isn't just about trying to 'sneak' the knife to woodland without being seen, it is also about 'behaving sensibly'. You are transporting a...

    The hunters dream knife

Very neatly finished. You've obviously put a lot of thought into the handle design.

Ripping green planks in the field?

Awesome. A good rip saw is a wonder. I have a rip saw for ordinary work and it is terrific (it had been incorrectly sharpened for crosscut, I recut it for ripping).

    Dehydrated Fuel? Or Huel?

The problem I have with stuff like Huel is the claim to be 'a complete food'. I seriously doubt that. Our bodies are pretty good at making up for deficiencies in some nutrients, but over a long time that will cause issues. Eating a mix of foods is the answer, not eating a really restricted...

    What's with all these crossovers/SUVs?

It is partly fashion and partly brought about by the change in law for child seats. The legal requirement to have children in seats and booster seats, plus the change in size of these seats (they are nearly double the width they were 15 years ago) has meant that a 'family' car needs to be larger...

New knife purchases from shop in person only?

Your knee-jerk "drones' shouldn't allowed to have cameras" because of some jerks is as sensible as me demanding that all guns should be banned because some asshole pointed his shotgun at my wife when he was shooting ducks. There are idiots in this world and idiots will behave like idiots. Will...

New knife purchases from shop in person only?

That's a ridiculous response. Just how do you think a drone works? How are they flown? The 'licensing' being brought in is only for drones large enough to pose a hazard to aircraft.

The greatest off road vehicle ever!

I have a soft spot for goats, always liked them. However the energy required to persuade a goat to walk in the direction that you want to walk may well be greater than the energy it would take to just carry the packs yourself.

    Source of fabric.

I made my own hammock from skirt lining material. It's a synthetic polyester, commonly sold in fabric shops, very cheap. The width is perfect for hammocks. Have you tried ordinary fabric shops? See what they have, try out the fabrics, then go to the suppliers.

New knife purchases from shop in person only?

No It Doesn't A knife CAN be used as an offensive weapon but is designed for the purpose of being used as a tool. That is a clear and fundamental difference. There is a SAK in my bag. It is a tool. My son is a chef - he has at times carried more than 8 sharp knives in a bag, wrapped up. All...

New knife purchases from shop in person only?

I agree with most of the observations about kitchen knives - being stabbed with a serrated veg knife is a terrifying prospect, the knives cost tuppence from a supermarket, every kitchen has them. If legislation should be brought in, it should extend the 'zombie knife' type of restriction and...

How to use the Victorinox sharpening stone?

Washing up liquid works instead of oil on 'oilstones'. Keeps the metal particles in suspension so they don't get embedded in the stone, then you can just rinse it off.

    Cooking out with the firedragon

I tried cooking *in* the chimney. Used some old stainless bike spokes, put chunks of veg and hallumi cheese on them, I could fit two in the kettle at once. Let twigs burn down to coals then added the skewers. The 'elbow' on the bottom of the spokes stopped food from sliding off into the fire...

    A question about burnishing

As another finish to try, have a go at fire hardening. I think it was Dave Budd who had some dark tool handles - I asked him how he'd finished them, he said they were fire hardened. So I tried it with an axe handle. Play a blowtorch over it until the surface is starting to blacken, then rub off...
