    the stick

It is a thing of beauty and should be appreciated as such. Very obviously it is not a cane - far too short - so it is not a 'sword cane' and hence not becoming illegal under that category. Of course you wouldn't wear it on your belt walking down the street, but then neither would I wear a 10"...

Legality of living in a yurt in the UK...

There are lots of solutions to that. The classic one is to lay down pallets, then some sort of draft/damp-resistant membrane and then rugs. I've seen wooden flooring laid in sections on 4x2, in a similar way to temp staging/dance flooring. Stone flag entrances work well for taking off muddy...

Legality of living in a yurt in the UK...

Sounds right to me. Friends of mine lived in yurts for years, in a valley in lancaster. They were not the only ones living in yurts in that valley, at one point I think there were about 4 yurts up, 3 lived in pretty much year round. The yurts got moved now and then. Yes, they had permission...

    Pakayak

I hadn't thought of that but it is a really good point. A make that has been around for such a long time will be much easier to source spares and repair.

    Pakayak

No wonder that pakayak is so heavy, with joints across the boat like that, they had to make it very thick, out of a soft (but heavy) material. I think their design is a bit flawed from the start - or maybe it is an ok design for people who need something that packs away into a car, not...

    The problem with being practical

I had an old Corsa diesel. Thermocouple went that detected heat and turned off glowplugs. Old model engine, so replacement was going to be £60 I checked specs, and the new model one was identical apart from the cable connectors. £9. Bought the £9 new model version, files spade fittings so the...

    Forest Fires now

Where I grew up, a lot of the plants were fire-adapted. Some would not even germinate unless the seeds went through a fire. Is the boreal forest at all like that?

    Worst case scenario

Probably quite useful. There were a lot of people with badly bleeding injuries - stemming bleeding from cuts is pretty much the most important first aid that can be offered. That said, from my (very limited) knowledge, taking a T-shirt, folding it into a square and applying pressure over a...

    Bishops Wood

Anything that nerds in a nerd-rage might use as weapons on each other seems to be the rule. They have bouncers at the large events checking the stuff as you enter. So small stuff is ok, tools like dividers would probably not be allowed. Long sticks definitely not allowed. Functioning bows not...

Power banks and external mobile phone batteries

Anker all the way - you pay for reliability. I've just bought a new phone, after my Nexus 5 died. The new phone seems to last more than a day - went away for a weekend and didn't bother charging it until sun night. Was on 80% charge when I left on Fri and dropped to about 17% by 5pm on Sun...

    Bishops Wood

It's kind of sad, isn't it? I've been to one comic-con and a friend of our daughter's makes stuff for cosplayers. It has to be plastic, fabric and foam to meet the restrictions. They went to a comic-con event in London as a group dressed as characters from Mad Max - some of their gear was...

    For the kids

Those are terrific. Now, are you going to let the kids sharpen them?

Safest places to live post apocalypse ......... Just a bit of fun

That's not what happened after chernobyl blew. The high altitude winds seem to blow the other way.

Safest places to live post apocalypse ......... Just a bit of fun

Anchor up in somewhere like the humber or on sandbanks just offshore. Greenhouses can be built from plastic sheeting. Soil can be loaded from land using a barge - put a digger on a barge and dig out some soil. Bring back on board.

    Corroded up lighter - alternatives

But what is the point of carrying two if both of them corrode up? I'm still a bit perplexed as to why it corroded so fast.

    Bishops Wood

There is a reason behind the painted plastic; most of the comic-con events will not let people in with metal props. So you end up having to make things from plastic and painting them to imitate plastic. Just isn't the same . . . Wayland, sorry to hear about your eyesight. It is a right bugger...

    Corroded up lighter - alternatives

Was away camping on the weekend - just car camping. Chucked stuff in the car, got to campsite. When I opened up the cooking gear the lighter in there was corroded solid. It had got wet when I was out last, a month or two back, but I hadn't left it sitting in water, it was in a dry pan. damn...

Safest places to live post apocalypse ......... Just a bit of fun

Any really large ship. Tons of oil on board. Food supplies for a crew for weeks and plenty of carrying capacity to take on more. Set up greenhouses on deck.

    Best Headtorch?

Which model? My gamma has had heavy use for years and is still going strong. Friends use them and all rate them, with the sole failure point being the battery compartment being difficult to close - if you are clumsy and force it, you can break it.

    into the wild

I'm not sure he was an idiot, I suspect there was an aspect of mental illness. He was not far from other people and help but didn't seek it out when he started to get ill but was still capable of walking.
