    An Introduction to Pressure Canning

Me too. I felt your blanket times for 55 or 75 minutes in your previous post goes against the safe way to can according to the very specific guidelines the USDA provide and wanted to point out the variation they give within the produce you mentioned a single time for. Between the USDA and the...

    An Introduction to Pressure Canning

My take on pressure canning is this can result in long term stored food with botulism, which I believe is not noticeable like mould etc would be. The USDA produce guidelines which result from something like 100 years of lab research. This is why a canner is required, not just a pressure cooker...

    Firesteel protection

Having never noticed corrosion myself, is this a surface kind of thing that scrapes straight off, or will it be entirely eaten up in short order once it starts? Wouldn't the exotac stuff be ally, so would just corrode shut if left in a moist salty pocket anyway?

    Food dehydrator

Just recipes from the Idiots guide I mentioned, Pina Colada is banana, pineapple and coconut milk blended, the other is strawberries, apple sauce a bit of sugar and Merlot blended, spread on a sheet of silicon or greaseproof paper (but trickier) and dried into a fruit leather.

    Isn't the weather weird ?

The Windy app gives a view of what the weather systems worldwide might do. They use reds and purples for what turn out to be not that speedy winds but it looks scary :)

Camper Conversion - Basic Layout options.

Separett do a folding composting toilet. Not sure how stinky, to not be stinky they normally need a computer fan to help dry out the solids. We lived in a camper for three years with the house rented out. The only thing I missed was a garden to tend. Ulrich Dolde does aim a bit at truck campers...

    An Introduction to Pressure Canning

Hi and thank you for the reply. I seem to remember something about not changing the proportions of tomatoes which, by changing the overall acidity, you won't end up with a long term safe food. May have been in something like spag bol rather than just a veg dish.

    Food dehydrator

We've had a dehydrator for about a year now. Recently we added silicone trays to make fruit leather, from the Complete Idiots Guide to Dehydrated Foods, such as Pina Colada and Strawberry and Merlot which are lovely. I've made beef jerky, plain, garlic, and also some South African braii salt...

    An Introduction to Pressure Canning

After watching BRs vid I now have an imported canner, some jars, a USDA cookbook and some Tattler lids that are reusable but pricey from Amazon (cheaper if they last?). A friend makes and cans bone broth so I'll be looking to him for guidance. We have two smallish freezers, I thought about...

    My first self forged knife

I made a knife under the guidance of someone who knows what he's doing which was a lovely experience. It kind of went where it wanted which was weird but still ended up as usable. I also tried with a bit of stainless rebar which was horrendously hard. Uri Hofi has a dvd on how to use the hammer...

Modern tech leading to dumber thoughts?

I find spell checkers handy mostly because the useless touchscreen keyboard won't actually pick up everything I type correctly, so it's checking itself really :) My lad has been watching too much youtube Minecraft videos while pestering for the game for him to play. He got one for Christmas and...

    Buffalo Special 6 - astonished

I also bought a "Buffalo" top from a fleabay army surplus seller. It does appear to be ex UK army but made in China, is a similar design but shorter zips on vents and chest pocket, and a similar fleece to the Active Lite shirt. I hoped to use and abuse the surplus one keeping the Lite shirt in...

    Buffalo Special 6 - astonished

I'm on my second, so I have a grubby one and a going out one :) Plus a Belay jacket and an Active Lite shirt, and salopettes made to fit my little legs. The Belay jacket by itself is, apart from going into town, a bit rubbish because it's too flappy and lets too much breeze in round the bottom...

    The Science of Water

Without wanting to start another thread, I was recently looking at a small water filter, the Lifestraw. It does not remove virus but somewhere I read this is not an issue because you will know if the water you will be filtering will have virus in it or not. So are there parts of the UK/world...

Planning to buy a sharpening system

Hi. Having struggled to be consistent with a wet stone, i was looking at the Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener. Seems ok for home use and carryable? Anyone tried it? :)
