Same here, they tend to be on the larger size. Usually wear a L but i can wear M from woolpower. They have a lot of stretch also and should be a little bit snug if you want to wear it under something else.
I learned that the "hard way". I baked some bread in my duch oven and then sliced it while it was still warm. That knife went from looking brand new to a nice patina in 1 minute :)
As it is made of plastics, it will work great, but will start to smell if you need to wear it for multiple days. You can't beat merinowool in my opinion.
You can cut volume by deleting the part where you lay on. That doesn't insulate so it 's a waste of material and volume. I sleep under a topquilt which works great with a good mat.
The point of a baselayer is that it's tight to your body so it insulates the best it can. It does that by having air trapped and wick moisture away. If you are going to layer that with cotton, the cotton will eventually get moist and block the merino from doing what it's supposed to do.

I have had multiple "goretex (pro) jackets" from different brands and all of them failed pretty fast and didn't breathe all that well. I now have a Norrøna Dovre jacket, which was expensive but in my experience perfoms way better than any goretex jacket.
Someone pointed out this ebay auction to me of a very, very rought looking Woodlore. So i thought, with some luck i might just get this for cheap. Well, i was wrong, it went for $810,-
