Not finished yet - I'd like it a bit smoother, although no point getting it too perfect. It was a lot of money for me at the time but reckon it may have increased in value, not that I'm planning on selling it. It came with a beautiful custom sheath too, made by BlackSheep of this parish
I bought one of these over 10 years ago because the handle was simply gorgeous. It hasn't seen a huge amount of use but I used it yesterday to gralloch a roe deer. Blade got quite badly chipped on the bones so I've been spending some time today fixing it
Just wondered if anyone else was...
Many thanks! Christiane Gunzi was running it. Bound to be someone local to you. If not, there are online courses and tutorials. If you have a source of free willow or are prepared to buy it then just give it a go!
The changes in colour are because she brought along various types of willow for us to try, wasn't really a design per se. I used quite a bit of brown black maul because that's what I grow. It was tough to use.
As a result I ordered a load of fresh cut willow varieties from Somerset and have...
Christiane Gunzi was running it. I did find it easier, I think, but everyone made good baskets. I'd have liked more time but I guess making the next one should be even quicker.
Handle needed another weaver as it's a bit loose. Strong, though, unlikely to come apart in the near future
Went on a paid course on Saturday. Took 6 hours to create this. Very proud of what I've achieved. We were running out of time at the end so the handle is a bit rushed but it's sturdy and functional. About 40cm across.
I've just sorted last year's harvest to length and will be soaking some soon.
Like toys, knives should be used, I personally can't see the point of owning them otherwise. It's the most expensive knife I ever bought but it's probably gone up in value, not that I'm in any hurry to sell it
Here you go. The logo on the sheath is of a sheep (possibly Shawn the sheep) - think the maker had the username blacksheep or something, but can't remember now.
Bark doesn't look right for alder and in my experience, it's very light in weight. The orange tinge is quite vivid.
Black locust is a possibility, but that normally tinges yellow and there are often thorns on the trunk.
I don't think it's elm - I had a couple of tonnes tipped yesterday and the...
I had mine running all night to make venison jerky (teriyaki/garlic). I'm told the shelf life is quite long but I think I'll have scoffed the lot before Wednesday.
If I'm out for rabbits, I carry a small folding utility knife with a carpet blade in it. For deer, I predominantly use the Mora "Roe" knife, which has a tiny blade with a welded bead on the tip. I have a small lock knife in the sleeve pocket of my smock (Kabar Dozier Hunter in blaze orange) for...
I used my BCUK Spyderco to gralloch a deer on Friday. The hole is a bit of a pain to clean and the lovely spalted handle tends to blend into the leaf litter if you put it down but otherwise it did a lovely job. The original sheath is horrible but fortunately mine came with a custom leather...
Bought a jar of "No Goose Goose Fat" from Sainsbury's today - it's just coconut oil, which I'll use instead of tallow for lubricating my bodkin in basket weaving. Normal price £2.40, on clearance 24p!
