What wildlife did you spot today?

I've had a lot of serious damage to almost all my Silver Birches from the squirrels. And they've started on the young Oaks, and others, now. They were all born out of wedlock...

I do hope, for your sake, that she is not on this site! Otherwise "Your dinner? It is in the bin, my darling..."

    2024 Bushcraft Goals

I followed the link originally from the Firebox Stove Kickstarter Project for the 5-Way Cookset. This is the actual link for the paper folding instructions: If you want to make them for other shaped-and-sized rectangular-ish pots and pans, the general formula for the paper size needed I've...

    2024 Bushcraft Goals

Ta. I'd not really come across it before but the Parchment Paper stops food from sticking to the pan, and saves on the washing-up - a good bonus when one is out in the wilds somewhere! My batch of paper will cope with temps. (oven or otherwise) up to 230ºC.

    2024 Bushcraft Goals

This is an experiment cooking in Parchment Paper in a small Dutch Oven on briquettes. Browning the cubed pork in the spices... Simmering in the Tikka Masala sauce, with mushrooms... And not forgetting the Nan! All washed down with a glass of mildly-fermented grape juice. Pas mal, as some...

Jerven bag? Which one and any accessories?

I have had the Jerven Bag Exclusive along with 2 different weight liners for a decade or more now. I've never slept in it as a bag (yet) but used it on many occasions as a groundsheet, as a cagoule, as a windproof and / or waterproof shelter, as a tarp, etc. It has also been used on two...

    EDC - Money

A cashless society is also dependent on infrastructure. Damage to one or more of the electricity network, the internet, banking / finance servers or the mobile network - possibly by a bad actor - will cause a "hiccup" in the payment system, albeit possibly relatively localised. Not having all...

    EDC - Money

I always carry cash, along with card. I tend to shop locally so I pay cash for everything from local stores, and the market, up to around £50 - £60, then card. Cash lasts the local businesses longer than card payments. Funnily, once or twice they've not had change so I've had to pay by card...

Thanks! Anchovy and Olive. I felt the lid could have perhaps done with another couple of briquettes. Ah, well...I'm just going to have to try again...

    2024 Bushcraft Goals

I've been managing to get a few "projects" done. It's been a little difficult until a week or so ago due to the weather. Amongst others... This is baking in a Billy on a Firebox Stove. The Zebra Billy Tin baking kit includes a piece of shaped wire to help keep coals on top of the billy for...

    Car sleeping?

As you don't have a vehicle at the moment, why not just hire a camper when you want to go away for a few days? I'm sure your ladies would appreciate that more than kipping in the back of a car! With no decent loo...

    Government emergency website

I use 15L - 20L a week for cooking and drinking, and have around 8 - 10 weeks' supply. In my last house, like Broch, the water supply came from a deep aquifer. We never even filtered it. When the CH engineer came to do the annual service / maintenance he would take a few bottles of it back with...

    Government emergency website

My tap water seems strongly chlorinated (or whatever chemical it is), so much so I can even taste it on, for example, pasta that I've cooked. Not nice. I've even smelt it on myself after a shower. I've been buying bottled water in 5L plastic bottles for quite some time. However, where I get it...

What wildlife did you spot today?

A Grass Snake, hurtling across the path in front of me at warp speed. Black Mountains, BBNP. I stood quietly for a few minutes to see if it would reappear from the clump of grass and heather in which it went to ground. But, no luck...

Battery generators - what & why?

I have an Ecoflow Delta Max 2000 along with 2 x Ecoflow Delta Max Smart batteries giving me 6kW of storage. With 2 x 400W solar panels the system provided around half my electricity for 6 months last year, running the fridge, freezer, washing machine, microwave, breadmaker, miscellaneous...

    2024 Bushcraft Goals

I'm hoping to try some more and different open-fire cooking techniques this year, using - amongst others - Reflector Oven, Dutch Oven, and also my Zebra Billy Pot as an Oven on my Firebox Stove (only had one go at this so far). And I'm currently looking forward to the delivery of my 5-Way Cast...

    Spring has Sprung - 2024

I saw my first few new foals from the "wild" Mountain Ponies up in the Black Mountains in Bannau Brycheiniog NP (in Wales, UK) today. They weren't around just a few days ago.
