Is a psk really needed in the UK?

Interesting thread... I think that a 'survival kit' became a bit of a fetish thing here in the 80s, probably all down to Lofty Wiseman. The necessity for compactness is obvious when you have to carry everything to live and fight with in webbing and a bergen, and a bit in your pockets. Putting...

    1980s Survival catalogue pages

I think I have lot of old copies of that in a trunk in a shed, and its 'Annual', hadn't thought of it for years, will have a look tomorrow - in fact my mind boggle as what else may be with them; catalogues and the like I mean...

Two thirds of confirmed birds of prey illegal killings last year linked to shooting estates...

Fair enough, sometimes it's hard to convey things in writing that would be very simple with an expression or tone of voice. I wasn't 'upset', just a wee bit irritated... ;) Those fellows you mention sound like utter s***s to me, I am pleased to write that around here, quite apart form personal...

    Dutch Oven tips and tricks

Hmm, that's almost too much; there are many such things available if you google 'potjiekos' - I lived in Southern Africa for some time and the camp food can be superb.

    A rare treat!

Beautiful; perhaps oddly, we've seen more here (West Carms) in recent years; and sadly in roadkill too... our other mustelid numbers seem pretty constant except badgers, which increase, we've no mink that I know of, otters are back so that probably helps.

I'm the opposite, and wouldn't consider it for a moment; they are all native species, its what they've evolved to and it's part of reaching a natural balance. But... if there were unnaturally high numbers of sparrowhawks because of human intervention of some sort, I'd then say that a cull may...

Some fair comments there. Badgers is an interesting one... most with cattle around here are dairy, only a couple of us purely beef. TB has been an enormous problem for them, and the idiocy of Westminster and Cardiff with an obstinate refusal to seriously look at culls or vaccination simply...

Firstly, as I've written above, I am definitely 'greener' than most in farming, so that obviously has a bearing on my conclusions. I'd be surprised if I lose any more than three or four at most in any given year to kites, certainly less than 1% of a lamb crop. Corvids will account for maybe ten...

Certainly some of what you write does go on, I doubt it is as much as you think though. However, it is a fact that a relatively glancing hit by a car can kill a badger. If you go back to the superb children's book 'Brendon Chase' by BB, reference is made in it to the vulnerability if badgers to...

Right, I farm beef and lamb here in West Wales. We only lamb outdoors and I have seen kites waiting in a tree while a ewe lambs and then, if there is a second one coming, go down and start on the first born when the ewe is otherwise occupied. Obviously if I'm close enough the kites will not...

    Dutch Oven tips and tricks

If it's been properly cured it's pretty much bomb-proof and you are set for all sorts of cooking. One thing which doesn't seem to be as common as might be expected, is to use it as a smoker. You'll need an inner bit of mesh to raise the meat from the base; then just put the smoking medium on...

    International Men's Day.

I had one done at a GP's suggestion, not because of any concern since I was there for an entirely unrelated thing, but because I was over fifty she thought it sensible; had a load of bloods done at the same time on her advice. Periodic servicing I guess...

The Police have recovered the bodies of the four lads who went missing on Sunday.

My heart is on the ground, such fine-looking lads... as above, it could have been me years ago, and in a very few years it could be any of my own children. But what else can you do but let them go free? Bit more of a hug for them tonight though... :(

    Edible fish in the UK

Interesting, thanks for that, had no idea about the bass rules until seeing your post. When I was a lad we mostly went for them with spear guns; somewhat irresponsibly I don't think we even considered 'quotas' or limits then. Hmm... it's a bit grim when you start thinking back in decades...

    International Men's Day.

Quite right, this is a very important subject and it simply shouldn't be a place for vitriol. That written, I don't see anything wrong with civil disagreement, and I certainly don't expect everyone (or even anyone) to agree with me on everything... including Mrs GNJC.

Dear oh dear, you really do seem to have a bit of a problem with all this; and particularly with people not agreeing with you. I wonder why... But hey, I'm grateful for your reassurance that you've moved on from and are above caveman-like reactions, you know, like aggressive language and...

I'll second that the taste may not be great; when I was very young I caught, cooked and ate pretty much anything. Almost everything was revolting... :yuck:

No, all the evidence is that we are still cavemen, i.e. our hard-wiring / psychology hasn't changed as quickly as some societies have, or as some may think that they have. I've nothing to 'deal with', the facts are as presented, but suggestion appreciated. :thankyou:
