Yep, not sure why, but I think you've misunderstood my posts in this thread. I'm not looking for alternatives to iron cookware, just commented on the fact that it's good stuff and adds a certain 'feel' to an occasion.
It's an interesting idea, but there is a potential to irritate others too; I guess that's down to us having a pretty dense population...
As for what to take, a poncho / basha or waterproofs, bivvy bag, doss bag, steel mug, WB and some cash.
Interesting; I've known potjies & 'cauldrons' my whole life, but I can't recall ever hearing of aluminium ones before reading your post. By immediate thought was... they'll melt!
Looking at the facts that aluminium melts at 660 degrees C and that fire coals can get up to 600 degrees C, my...
Rooftops would be ideal, and I have a couple that would be suitable, but Mrs GNJC is very scared of heights...
So I guess I'll end up having to build something like decking, a few feet high and with lift-up steps and a badger-proof balustrade all around.
I'll probably be allowed to pay for it...
Going solo I've never considered taking cast iron; but with a group I have, I've a couple of small potjies which I've carried, the lid and other stuff I'd normally heft going with others, and it was no problem bar being a bit awkward to pack. A plat potjie is easiest because of the lack of legs...
Hmm... Mrs GNJC is keen on that, and she's been on courses with the local society, we also have a few resident colonies and they swarm now and then. But... we have a serious number of badgers around here and they have caused havoc for people with hives.
I have cattle and TB is a big thing here...
Haven't come across the word 'metheglin' for years; wonderful stuff... if you get the mix right. I had an uncle who could do so without fail, my own attempts were hit and miss. Obviously it's all personal taste, but mead is such good stuff of itself that it's a pity to make mistakes with it...
Interesting thread... being lazy and rarely able to persuade Mrs GNJC to reinforce the insides of my pockets, I have a large number or trousers and shorts with a conspicuous (some might say suspicious) hole rubbed through where the end of my Victorinox Mauser rubs as it lies flat in the...
Purely out of interest... what for; are you a collector or do you use it outdoors?
I'm asking because my own experiences with things made from that type of material in this climate has lead me to avoid it ever since.
I've cut lots of yew and guarantee I've had splinters from it or handled it with open cuts and scratches, and... I am still here. However, I have had young stock die from eating it - which is why I've cut a lot of yew... :( (Foxgloves - digitalis - are the main go-to way for lambs to kill...
I have a particular liking for cooking with fire, inside or out, and so have numerous cookbooks form the 18th Century. Many of their recipes (receipts!) make modern dishes seem rather boring and bland. Just google some of them and you'll get some good ideas.
Which is a perfect example of knee-jerk, and so very poor, legislation - and I write that because it always could have done so under already existing laws.
This is the sort of idiocy that the Law Commission has a partial role to - theoretically, anyway  - see avoided. I can't tell...
Almost anything can be construed as an 'offensive weapon' with sufficiently good advocacy, but that can be countered by competent defence Counsel - there is no and can be no exhaustive list. So it's very often down to what is adduced and how the witnesses come up to proof that matters most.
The...
If you mean over here, the law and the directions for its implementation have actually gone the other way and made homeowners' rights more clear. The situation is far from perfect, but the drift toward automatic 'victimhood' for the intruder has been stopped and reversed, somewhat.
