    Holly?

Hey chaps. I've had a holly burl for a number of years now, and got around to contemplating a kuksa shape in it. I remember reading that it was safe for a drinking vessel a while back, so proceeded to blunt my knives on it. It was a hard carve, and had to use a ball gauge on it for most of the...

    Mini rocket stoves

Hey. I love a good rocket stove, always makes me feel that I'm cheating using one for boiling water. I recently backed a folding one on KS, might be worth a look for design inspiration. It's called the firetower by arnaud.

No takers for the free cup then? Was hoping someone would want it, being free to a good home.

Birch burls waiting in the wings.

Hey chaps. Not been able to do any carving or related due to other commitments. So I've decided to leave the latest one 'as is' I'll not attempt to try and fashion a way to lay it safely with a beverage inside. It's usable as it is. So if anyone would like to have it, free of charge, just...

    Swedish Smock Renovation

Here you go. Found the original thread. They're still intact, after a few hot washes over the years since being added.

Knocked these up this afternoon.. wood buttons.

Decided to update you all on the buttons, as there's another chappy renovating his smock. They're still on the smock, no signs of breaking either.

    Swedish Smock Renovation

Nice. I have one too. Replaced the buttons with homemade ones out of spalted birch. Recently had it altered to fit me better. It was very loose in places. Fits much better now.

Birch burls waiting in the wings.

So it didn't didn't take long to realise that the chaotic shape of the burl will not sit safely, while using a birch leaf as a crutch. So I'm thinking maybe a curled leaf shape would maybe do the trick. Or am I just complicating things? Surely the user would like to be able to set it down, and...

Hardware sourcing for recreating Swedish Defense Force Lone Wolf button tarp poncho.

I saw lone wolf and immediately thought of my lone wolf tarp. Which is made of apocalypse proof rubbery plastic. Imagined a garment, if worn, would guarantee weight loss.

Birch burls waiting in the wings.

The walls vary in thickness. Currently all areas under 8mm roughly. There is still thinning to do. But have to be careful not to take too much off in some areas. Think I'll have a crack at carving a birch leaf toggle and maybe shape it to allow the cup to sit level. A suggestion gratefully received.

Birch burls waiting in the wings.

I feel for you in that heat. I get grotty when the temps get like that. Must be hard for you guys over there not used to the heat. I think I'll extend the natural sipping edge around the cup, for convenience to the drinker. Also thinking about attaching a leather cord somwhere on it. Possible on...

Birch burls waiting in the wings.

Sorry to hear about your health. Glad you're on the mend. That's awesome RV. An interesting and useful carving for all to appreciate. Love the idea of an informative story of nature for children to grasp. The bench is inspiring for me. I keep telling myself that I need to fashion one. It would...

Birch burls waiting in the wings.

Did a little more today. Was tricky in places, being such an odd shape, but using the still thick top edge, and my thumb as a lever made it easier than I thought it would be. Filled it with water and its just shy of 200mls capacity, happy with that and will be more once finished. No handle, but...

Birch burls waiting in the wings.

I've not noticed a texture change. The other burls I carved have not changed at all over the years. I guess they must have been pretty dry when first cut. The gouge is a Hans Karlson dogleg.

Birch burls waiting in the wings.

Made a start on the smaller of the burls. Its a bit of an odd shape, and will certainly be a quirky kuksa if I can manage to follow the shape of it. Not decided whether to leave the outside as it is, or cut back to a smooth surface. As you can see there is some birds eye grain there, so I'm glad...
