    *The* Gift-It-On Thread

Up for grabs, two clasp knives in good nick, one I believe is a Miner's knife, the other is a British Army knife with tin/bottle opener.

    Humidity and cooling down

I had a bit of 99% IPA that I mixed 70/30 with water and used that in a spray bottle to use to cool down, it worked well. Anything you can use to drop the flashpoint of water helps in high humidity. Just glad I wasn't near any ignition sources...

    Kettle Contents

Good Afternoon All, A question purely out of being a nosey parker but what do you all keep in your kettles when out and about? they are such convenient method of boiling water while out and about but I'm sure we all have different things to put in them. My little Trangia 27 kettle contains...

Another rucksack recommendation request - commuting.

I picked up one of these about 10 years ago and it's spot on for the daily commute and going out for day hikes and overnighting, lord knows where you would find one now though but I assume they have an updated version. https://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/241617/osprey-nebula-34-backpack-241617

    What are you currently reading?

Just finished the last book, well worth it, I'd highly recommend it to anyone who wants a bit of a wild west adventure.

    What are you currently reading?

I'm afraid I get rare an opportunity to read nowadays but I'm rattling through audiobooks on my commute. I've just started the last in Stephen King's The Dark Tower series. Part of me didn't want to start the last book because then the adventure would be over.

    BATCO Sheet

Good Morning All, This may be of interest to a select few of you but I was planning an encryption session for the scouts and in the process of doing so came up with a BATCO sheet which randomises itself every time you hit enter but will print two identical sheets so both parties have the same...

    Mini-Slingshot for nuts

Plenty of good ideas here, thank you all. I made up a 10m dipole last night so I'll try these out over the week. I think the fiberglass pole would be handy if I go somewhere without trees but also as a delivery method. I'm working from home tomorrow so I can have the radio on in the background...

    Mini-Slingshot for nuts

Good Morning All, Just seeing if anyone in the hive mind has any ideas on this; I need to get a bank line up a tree, about 10 m tall. At the moment I've achieved it using an M12 nut and the mk1 arm but with all the skill and grace of a blind limp-wristed squid. Either I threw it with enough...

    Surplus for Civilians

One thing I tend to do now is to get the desert DPM clothing as it's cheap as chips then dye it brown, it's just as functional but looks sufficiently not like the uniform that it's ok to wear out and about. I just need to work out how to dye my bergan now...

    Wood burners in the news

I think wood burning stoves are fine, the house we moved to doesn't have gas so all our heating is electric bar the two wood stoves, one in the kitchen and one in the living room. We have a fire most nights in the winter as it means we can turn off most of the heaters. As much as I would like...

    Survival Scarf / Shemagh Combo.

I've got a few Kufiya from https://www.kufiya.org/ they are by far the best ones around, they're nice and robust, so far I've put some guy lines on each corner to create a sunshade, used it as a blanket in winter, and at one point as an emergency nappy for the baby. Given the vast range of...

What would a modern scouts be like?

Not that I've known but I only joined as a leader at the start of Covid so we've not been out much in the last couple of years.

What would a modern scouts be like?

I'll give the parents credit, we send out a rough plan of what we'll do each term the risk assessment before each activity (Fairly cut and paste as the risks are all quite similar) and the parent are more than happy with that, if a kid get hurt the parents are quite philosophical about it as...

    Pattern 58

A goretex bivvy bag will do well to keep any wet wind off the outside and you'll want a decent roll mat but other than that they do well, I've slept out in the snow in them and they're fine, just don't go to bed wearing lots of clothes otherwise you'll feel cold, sleep in a baselayer and let the...

    Baofeng Fanboys & Fan Girls

I made a flower pot antenna last week, I've yet to try it in anger. I got a length of Black PCV pipe from screwfix for about £3. https://www.screwfix.com/p/tower-round-upvc-black-conduit-25mm-x-3m/1617p You can get a couple of flower pot antennae out of the single 3 meter length so if there's...
