I had the same problem. Only way I could think of solving it was to buy an inflatable. It's a compromise with short comings but at least I can get on the water.

I suppose that one advantage of having been born during the second world war is that we've seen it all before and have lead our who!e lives prepared for emergencies. Didn't really expect to see it again, though.
