    Home made Thorn proof dressing?

Carnauba might be a modern addition. I do not know how far back in time oil/wax cloth goes. 1700’? 1800’? Before oil cloth I guess they either stayed in shelter, or got pneumonia and contributed to the average life span of around 40 years!

    Home made Thorn proof dressing?

That is the fun with internet and YouTube tutorials. Worldwide. Next time you holiday in your favourite All Inclusive in Turkey and see a guy that is all shiny and oily, he probably oiled his water proofs with home made Grönlands Vax and it all melted on his shin. Cue: Grönlands Vax means...

    Tactical Tracking Trail

One day, in the middle of a poo analysis, you will discover that the creature had a Full English for breakfast! This thread reminds me of that Indian vs Inuit joke our resident 1st Nation member posted a year or so ago.

    Holistic Homestead Energy Systems.

We have 2 circuits, a 110-120V and the first floor has an additional 220-240 V circuit. Dedicated fuse boxes, safety thingies. The instalment cost basically doubled ( we did this when we built the house). A DIY solar panel, battery storage and some cabling should work out cheaper ( if it is...

Tradition. In the old days they could have a few bottles of Cocoa Cola and get imaginative. I have ripped Thornproof Barbour several times. Compare Grönlands Vax with Barbour Wax. See and fel a difference? Yes? Wonder why? Answer: Grönlands Vax is made for sub Arctic and Arctic temperatures...

Ban on sale of coal and wet wood.

Yep, two options, the Dutch one, or the Chinese one. When I moved from Sweden to England, it was winter. The first olfactory sensations, and ‘aha!’ moments, were that England air and the English had a similar smell as the air and people in Eastern Europe. If some state genius connects the...

    Soggy crisps

Well, the storms do not have one name. The latest one, some European countries called it Ciara, other European countries called it Sabine, but the North American’s called it Kade. Influenza’s are called by the type of virus usually? But for the latest one, I still do not understand why they...

Domestic Heating Choices - fighting climate change

What would they use it for? Power a radio while waiting for the water to boil? Plug in a razor and shave? The Soviets/Russians were and are great lateral thinkers. Deekin, as my system is in Norway in the Arctic, I will not give you any sums, but the electricity bill went down about 1/3...

    Home made Thorn proof dressing?

‘Thornproof’ refers to the fabric does it not? The dressing acts as a water barrier, it prevents ( lessens in real life) water ingress. A thorn will penetrate this dressing easily. I did my own dressing of a whole Barbour jacket once. Ended up sending it to Barbour to be fixed. I think they...

    grubby question

What I find unappetising eating bugs and such is that you eat it with all internal organs including poo, still inside. I do remove the intestine on shrimp.

Ban on sale of coal and wet wood.

The best ones are in fact a Swedish invention. Wood was running out in the part where people lived ( southern half) and what little remains was needed for the metal smelting industry. The Roots were used to get Tar and Tar Oil. Google 'kakelugn'. Sometime in the 1700' I think. Edit: Carl...

Domestic Heating Choices - fighting climate change

The one in the old house is a Panasonic, and I think we will get the same brand in the new house. Direct heaters for the water. Stiebel Eltron. Proper German quality. We have three installed here on Island. Great money saver ( Energy = money) The problem of having a low temp inside a house...

Ban on sale of coal and wet wood.

The quality woodburner should be fed with outside air. Quality flues have this designed in them. Quite pointless to draw in room temperature air, which is replaced by cold outside air, Check how much air the burner uses on average. It is a lot, even for a small one. There is a way to burn wood...

Should be dried outdoors. One benefit is that it provides shelter for insects and mice. Buy 'wet', store outdoors for a year. Burn.

Domestic Heating Choices - fighting climate change

Well, the direct cost is high ( around 10 000 UKP?) but if you are replacing an old system it will save you lots of money long term. Servicing - We have been advised (by the installer) NOT to service it, but only to fix it if it breaks down. 7 years now - no servicing , no repairs. It runs...

Domestic Heating Choices - fighting climate change

The most energy efficient ( and environmentally friendly) way to heat a house is to insulate properly then use air to air heat pumps. Woodburners are a fantastic backup. If you buy one, make sure you can cook on it, or have a pan small enough to fit inside it.

where to get bone broth suitable for dogs?

I would not dream of giving a such fantastic broth to a dog! (with or without an onion) Lick my plate after I enjoyed it - yes. I have been a dedicated pressure cooker fan all my life. I dislike the Aluminium vessels, as I once discovered heavy pitting in one I had used for a couple of...

    Soggy crisps

Before they started naming them, people knew that a storm was dangerous, and took appropriate action. I do not believe people today need to be able to call a storm by a name to know the dangers. Or do they? Sad when people die when they could have prevented it by maybe thinking and being more...
