Canoes / kayaks - family recommendations?

You have a brand called Klepper. Used by the Swedish coastal rangers in the past, before they switched to more modern, custom made design. Klepper is still one of the best though I believe. You buy it for life. https://klepper.de/en

    Forced patina questions - rust?!?

Modern gun blue contains Phosphoric acid. I use it a lot in work, and sometimes take some home for deep cleaning rusted steel. I have started to use Evapo Rust though, and it is superior in all apects. Then use various brands of Gun Blue, depending on required end colour.

I had one of those. Fantastic speed machine ( compared to GRP or injection moulded plastic.) I recommend you take up PN offer, it will convert you to that design and make!

    Hat recommendations please

https://www.furhatworld.com/ You can see various styles of fur hats in that Link. I know the ’aviator ’ and ’trapper’ style as I have them myself. But, as you live in a country where it does not get that cold, a Wool hat with a visor should be enough...

You stick the blade in potatoes, and let it be there for a time. Any vinegar.

    Forced patina questions - rust?!?

Gun Blue is fairly stable, if done properly. But I have found that most surface treatments wear off when you use a knife, cutting wood and similar. Even that Grey-Black stuff they put on Fallkniven knives scratches wears. Ever owned a watch with a DLC coating? Comes off. It is the...

Question about wool insulation and felt

I remember from a course I did decades ago that they used cleaned, unwashed wool, carded, then rolled it between hides, beat it, then boiled. It was course in traditional Swedish (peasant) handicrafts. The boiling shrank it, and removed the fat. I think I remember they added something to the...

    Forced patina questions - rust?!?

Sounds stupid, but I would first brush off the loose bits, then use vinegar on the red rusted part, carefully, toothbrush off loosened bits, then wash off with a baking soda solution. This will neutralize the acid. Then dry ( hair dryer) then a bit of gun oil. ( Try the potato method next...

I was not present when he did. First time I did i stopped him. Now he knows! What is the chemical in the Oxygen decreasing bag? The drying crystals are made from Silica, which is used in the food industry. Harmless. Breast augmenting cuskhons are made from a flexible Silicone outer, and...

    Forced patina questions - rust?!?

Forced patina is a form of rust. My guess is that a bit of water got trapped under the bolster, and started a bit of 'classic' oxidation. Water + Oxygen + Iron = Rust My advice would be - clean it up, dry it properly ( all water gone between bolster and steel) then put a little bit of oil...

Mylar bagging - simple waterproof, air tight packaging

Ah, those! Have a funny story. Son used to use his pocket money to buy himself Beef Jerky, and snack on while gaming. He was around 10 or so. One night, we watched a movie, and he got out a new pack. Opened it, took out the little packet, opened it and sprinkled it over the jerky. ( I never had...

    Archeologists find the strangest things

Your top 3 steels and why?

I have a set of Myiabi Birchwoid kitchen knives. They have a core of some high tech steel, and clad in Damascus. Looks good. Zero added function though, the Damascus. Love them still, second best kitchen knives we have. Why is nobody doing a Damascus from Carbon steel and Stainless? Oxidise...
