    The Covid19 Thread

Of course it varies in effectiveness, as they have to do a guess. But even with the lowest effective one, lives are saved. It is easy when you are young to think ‘only the very old die, which is kind of natural’, but when you have reached those ages, you think differently!

I have been using the ‘silk’ setting. Maybe the name varies with the manufacturer?

    The Covid19 Thread

It is thanks to the vaccine the seasonal flu ‘only’ kills that number. Washing hands, not touching your face and avoiding crowds is a good start. Wonder how many Preppers will go into hiding?

Airports are always fun. Not. Some people will have facemasks on. I do not expect more than that. Will see when we land at T5 Friday morning!

    The Covid19 Thread

Do you live close to them? Because the best would be if they stayed at home, and only one person was allowed to bring them food and such. The more people they encounter, ( shopping, dr visits, church, whatever) the more chance they will pick it up.

    7.7 quake

Well, after the quake, today our dump caught fire. Big, big fire, not the usual tiny ones. The old tyre heap is burning too, it is downwind from the dump. We have some strong winds today, and they fan the fires. Huge fire, lots and lots of smoke. No rain for two months. Poor people living...

The way they socialise. Kiss kiss, crowded bars, voices at higher decibels. (That is my unqualified guess :). ) I do not understand why a such high mortality rate there. Substandard medical care? Italy was very well organised once upon a time. Huge land improvements, efficient eradication of...

Ban on sale of coal and wet wood.

Yeah, what happened in the biofuel field? I recall all those fields planted with fast growing bushes (willow?). Still something that is done and on the increase?

    Cleaning sleeping bags

Remember, the bag was used by a sweaty, unwashed trooper. I would not mind buying a used backpack if it was synthetic filled, but never a down filled one. Washing down/feathers decreases the insulation somewhat. Better to use a liner and wash that one.

    Cleaning sleeping bags

First, as it is used, check carefully for any tears inside out, plus for weak stitching. Keep the washing machine on the lowest heat, and the gentle cycle. Take out, hang up and drip dry for a while. Then put in tumble dryer, lowest heat. Check often, fluff up. If zip is difficult to operate...

You need a lot of loo paper ( and air freshener) when you eat all those beans. Did we stock up? Two bags of easy cook brown rice, one 24 pack of a nice version of a Jap. instant noodle dish, 2 gallons of Jamaican still mineral water. One gallon of veg. cooking oil. 2 cases of beer. Wine I have...

Whats the best grind for your ideal bushcraft knife?

The second knife from the top looks very interesting. What are the dimensions, and what do you use it for? It looks ‘pre industrial’ in shape. I have never heard of the various edges before I joined this forum.

Source long handled spoon knife and sharpening

Was not prehistoric copper ‘dirty’ with other metals and thus naturally a bit harder than the modern pure copper? The Copper age, it lasted what, one Millenium or so? One day they will laugh at our ridiculously soft steel implements that even need to be sharpened. I am still dreaming of a...

Thoughts on Removing Wood from Woodland

You wrote ‘green wood’ and also ‘deadwood’ in your initial post. I do not think anybody with one brain cell would stop you if you carried home a piece of a dead branch. But green wood, that is another matter. Taking that is a big no-no. Personally I always collected wood in UK when I had the...
