    Military Surplus Tents/Bashas/Bivvies

I have a growing wish for a laavu. I always love the look of them in pictures. I think it's been a subconscious thing for quite a while now.

The Uninitiated but keen to see the cold.

If you're hill walking, take two pairs of gloves. One to wear and one stuffed down inside your clothing. Then if / when the pair you're wearing get damp or cold, you can swap them. Some kind of thin merino wool balaclava. Cotswolds sell them. Sounds like you will be camping? If so, in addition...

Ah yes I hear it's breezy in Wales. Over in East Anglia my weather station is registering mild drifts of air.

    Trekking pole A frame

Yes I can't wait. I'm making quite a few mods to the t door 4 season inner I got from Ali express. I'm adding loops at various points to correspond to the fixing points on the outer, and conversely, loops on the outer to correspond to those on the inner. I want to get the inner taut, given I'm...

    Trekking pole A frame

Pretty excited to have discovered this: http://liteway.equipment/a-frame-connector Connects (and extends) two trekking poles to form an A frame structure. I intend to use this with my luxe hexpeak v4a. Wasn't cheap with postage, but it's from the Ukraine so no problems there. Might possibly...

    Down sleeping bags, advice please

I wonder if too much gets made of the 'getting down wet' thing. I've had both down and synthetic bags over the years, in all sorts of conditions, but I've never once got any bag wet enough to worry about it's ability to insulate. I currently have an oex leviathan ev 900. I bought it as it was...

    Fly-Tying

@SoldierPalmer where did you fish in the lake District, if you don't mind me asking? I spent many hours spinning for trout in the north lakes in various spots, when I was young. I was highly unsuccessful but loved every minute. I had a go tying flies but never caught anything with them. Funny...

Upgrading a 3 Season tent to 4 Season?

Aside from robustness, 3 season tents tend to have more mesh. One thing you could do is add a bivi bag to sleep system, if you haven't already done so, to keep any breeze off the sleeping bag.

That makes sense, I hadn't appreciated the difference.

    Cheap wax jackets

Being predominantly a climber of mountains, I generally wear goretex. My last one (goretex paclite) lasted over ten years of moderate use, and I replaced it yesterday. I do have a fjallraven jacket in their G1000 waxed cotton and find that it really isn't water proof and soaks up water in a...

    Test post plz ignore

I think if you count the number of posts on this thread and compare to the number of hypothetical posts that might have been posted, but weren't, then the number of posted posts are statistically insignificant. Therefore the original post can be considered to have been ignored. Well done all.

    Starting a bushcraft School

Yes, I've known, and work with, quite a few people who have set out on their own as consultants, either or their own volition or following redundancy. They all seem to have had the right skill sets and experience at the right time, along with the will to make it happen. And the right...

@GreyCat would you go back to normal employment if you could? Or are you happier with your current setup?

    Starting a bushcraft School

We live in an era where it's hard to innovate in any field. At least, it feels that way to me.

    Starting a bushcraft School

Perhaps the greatest value that schools can offer are for specialities, rather than general bushcraft. For example, Paul Kirtley offers specific plant id courses which are very in depth. There are specialist boyers offering courses, same for canoeing, butchery, fungal identification and so on...

    Axe upgrade

I've had my eye on the robin wood carving axe for a long time. It's a lovely looking axe. Problem is I just don't use axes enough to warrant buying them.

    Axe upgrade

Hi DocG. I had forgotten all about this old thread! I went on to do pretty much what you suggested. In the end I turned my old homebase hatchet into something of a carving axe. I filed it into a mostly one sided bevel, sanded down the handle and oiled it. It's shaving sharp now and carves quite...
