    Burning wet logs / woods

I can vouch for this. We got a stove put in a few years ago with an external flue. Nevermind not drawing, it has an actual downdraft. Air currents seem to go down the flue and then up theoug the house. We have to get an inferno going near instantly to make sure the flow reverses as quickly as...

    Lanshan 2 review (not mine)

I've come across bad reviews of the DD tracking pole tent too, when under rain. Perhaps I was overly harsh in my initial post though, especially as I've not actually used these tents. But as others have said, it's good to know the limitations of gear. I like wildbeare, she does put herself out...

    Lanshan 2 review (not mine)

Thanks both for the insight. Madriverrob I'm glad you've had better experiences with your lanshan :)

    Lanshan 2 review (not mine)

Actually I'd like to follow up with a question. I know there are a few mountain leaders on this forum, and people with a lot of experience. If camping in the mountains, particularly autumn, winter or spring, do you routinely take a goretex/breathable bivi bag to sleep in, in case of tent...

    Lanshan 2 review (not mine)

I've often been tempted by some of the cheaper tents out there, the lanshan, the naturehike tents etc., that tend towards being uktra or very lightweight. But some part of me has always been a bit skeptical. There are infinite reviews showing a lot of love for these tents, but very few that...

    Oh dear, now what?

    Amen to that!

    Oh dear, now what?

I think that dividing people into 'country' or 'city' isn't necessarily that accurate. I've lived in both at various points in my life. And most of us live in country/town blends, suburbia, small towns etc. Anyway I'm sure plenty of city folk are caring enough and sufficiently self aware and...

    Oh dear, now what?

I think the effects of YouTube and media don't help things. It's so easy to fall into weird YouTube worlds, where the minute it senses you have an interest in something it just feeds you endless content. Everything is quite in your face and it's easy to see how large numbers of people can be led...

    Oh dear, now what?

I forage lightly in my local area, a few plants, berries fungi here and there, mostly for experimentation. My impact is minimal. Nevertheless, if everyone in my area foraged as I do, there would be nothing left very quickly. But I have no greater right to forage than anyone else. There are just...

    Truffles

No I didn't. But once I'd scraped it off my pasta I was ok. Price per calorie it must be one of the most expensive foods out there! If I had a truffle pig I'd just make bacon.

    Truffles

I'd never eaten one but always wanted to try it. Finally I did get to try truffle in Italy a few years ago but found the flavour absolutely revolting. I was very disappointed!

    Wood ear mushrooms

Funnily enough some friends cooked me a Chinese the other week, which included the very similar cloud ear Auricularia cornea. Couldn't tell them apart by taste as there's no taste. Same texture too. They can be found in Chinese supermarkets. I got a bit excited and went on about elder and...

    Firesteel recommendation

I also favour the LMF over the others I own. It's the first ferrorod I bought and practiced on, and so is in an appalling state. Unfortunately, like yours, it still has plenty of life left in it!

    Fjallraven Trousers?

I looked at getting the Vida pro ventilated but they were an odd fit around the crotch. I ended up going for the non ventilated ones which fit perfectly. I've used them for a couple of years now and rate them very highly, but only for cool or cold weather.

    Firesteel recommendation

I might be getting mixed up here, but I think the softer ferrorods are suited to being scraped fast down their entire lengths whereas the harder ones, like the LMF, are better suited to having sparks generated from slower but hard pressure just at the end of the rod?

    Getting wet in Winter

Scotland has a particular brand of wet and cold. Sleet and rain to soak you at lower altitudes and then freezing conditions and wind on the climbs and at higher altitudes. Thinking back to activities I've been involved in, in the mountains, caving, diving, I've found generally that being wet is...

    Shelter for the hills

I kept things fairly simple for food. Breakfast was a Wayfayrer boil in the bag beans and sausage, with a cup of tea. Evening meals were wayfayrer boil in the bag curry or rice chilli, a small steamed pudding followed by an instant hot chocolate. Lunch was a tortilla wrap with tinned tuna...

Liquid fuel stoves? Diesel, Kerosene, car gas?

If you like cremated porridge get the xgk shaker. Mines the old one with the stiff fuel line. I've not used it in years but I don't remember it being good at simmering! I have fond memories of great sheets of flame leaping skyward when plriming it with petrol. I'm tempted to dust it down and...

    Shelter for the hills

Well I'm back from a successful two nights in the wilds of the breacon beacons. Thank you to those who advised me on using a tent. A tarp would have worked but the extra level of shelter was certainly welcome. I expected challenging terrain and conditions and it didn't disappoint. It was my...
