Ideas for retired fire hose please?

A bit late to the party. I imagine that what a fire department throws out is still usable for farmers. They have the pumps, need the diameters and lengths and indeed use them. I guess they are also used in bigger landscaping enterprises.

    Mess kits

In Germany such equipment was also issued to civil organisations like Police, Red Cross or whatever. That's why you find original German military equipment without the military insignia. Here it often comes in a different colour, funnily post WW2 the Army got olive stuff, civil organisations...

Frame or integral? rucksack (pack) design

I think the larger external frame rucksacks nearly died out because the frames broke in the airports and weren't practical for railway transport. Interestingly you still get the Norrona Recon Syncroflex, Bergans Powerframe, Savotta XL and Särmä RP80 Recon Pack, huge modern Nordic military...

    Austrian Feldschuh Boots

The shop you asked about is a small business. I didn't buy there yet but talked to the guy relatively long via telephone. I am convinced that he is absolutely serious and guess that he will deliver to the UK. He only can sell what he gets though. But he also can sell you boots that are made by...

Troublesome rucks: KSF, Särmä, Savotta, Berghaus, TT, and Wisport—help!

You know that you are talking here about pretty heavy rucksacks? Saracen and Savotta XL are everything else than ultralight.

    Budget merino wool

I tried Aldi and Lidl a few years ago and find them scratchy but weak and not warm enough for outdoor use. I also bought a set from Decathlon a few years ago and that is OK. I have no further comparison though and rather turned to a similar light polyester fleece option because I don't intend...

Oh, if it's just 1,2 litres of coffee it's probably fine. :cigar:

The issued cup that I have here weighs 256 g. It's the version with the butterfly handle. Has the issued cup also that volume? I don't drink 1,5 litres coffee each morning, or what ?

Bushcraft shelters in winter - no tent/sleeping bag

With this sentence I am perfectly comfortable.

Troublesome rucks: KSF, Särmä, Savotta, Berghaus, TT, and Wisport—help!

I know that Arwy in Herentals, Belgium got a big contract for Sting rucksacks in the new camouflage pattern NFP. In your situation I would call them and try to buy one directly from the maker, because it's likely that it would fit you, as it's developed out of your existing Lowe Alpine...

Bushcraft shelters in winter - no tent/sleeping bag

The scouts usually teach to try to avoid and hide but also how to read traces. And to be responsible, respectful and thankful. That's something different to the order to leave no traces, what's absolutely impossible. The sentence is pure nonsense. It's a PR slogan, nothing more, and a pretty...

Bushcraft shelters in winter - no tent/sleeping bag

I think your assumption is wrong. It's no problem to feed the fire every 90 minutes. We did it for thousands of years and still can learn it easily. It's an absolutely natural thing for humans, like swimming for example. You have to learn it and afterwards you simply can do it. I have...

How to safely have a fire on/in peaty ground?

You simply can't risk it unless it's totally muddy. In August 1975 they lost 130 square kilometers vegetation in North Germany due to that. The fires simply didn't stop for 10 days. https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brand_in_der_L%C3%BCneburger_Heide

Bushcraft shelters in winter - no tent/sleeping bag

Due to my job and personal preference I lived nearly like this as a student. There is a high risk to become depressive if you don't see enough sunlight

Bushcraft shelters in winter - no tent/sleeping bag

If you get lost in England and have a charged head lamp it's surely sensible to stay on the legs all night if it's cold. But if you are really in the middle of nowhere I think it's better to sleep at night by the fire and walk during the day, because that is more energy efficient in the long run.

Bushcraft shelters in winter - no tent/sleeping bag

Well, I have up to 5 cats in my construction trailer if it gets cold. The downside is only that my bed has exactly the size of a large insulation mat and all of them are in there. I think if you let the natural shelter standing around it might become interesting for some animals. A...
