I though you want to save the ferro rod. If it's lost the shemagh is an option of course.

    Small axe

If you use an Ochsenkopf Hatchet you don't need to concentrate so much onto the target as with a Fiskars X7 if you don't split kindling. The blade is simply longer. The X7 is idiot proof though and as good as indestructible in intended use. And it's lightweight. Well, but if I have to cut...

Alone (UK) TV series. What ten items would you choose?

You need the shemagh as pre filter for water purification by boiling and as a towel or shawl. One can prepare a lot of other tinders. As long as you stay in place you simply keep the fire going. I think Ötzi even carried embers around, isn't it?

Things that I don't use, wash or dry I put immediatly back into pocket or rucksack. A place for everything and everything always in its place. I never had a little boy scout in my groups who was unable to do that.

Do they get ferro rods without lanyard holes or what? The first thing I would do was attaching it with a 50 cm line to the belt.

Alone (UK) TV series. What ten items would you choose?

I can imagine that we can do a lot of tasks with a really sharp full size axe and an improvised stone knife instead of using a fix blade knife. But I didn't try it out of course. I got my first SAK when I was five years old and since then I had one in the pocket, always and everywhere. So, I...

Alone (UK) TV series. What ten items would you choose?

I would rather try to hunt smaller and less dangerous animals and even they might attack you. I often meet in Germany animals of all kind that I nearly could catch by hand, foxes, racoons, deer, birds of all sizes. But traps are surely more efficient. I think before you start such an adventure...

Alone (UK) TV series. What ten items would you choose?

Not so easy, really! I think I would take the following: Sleeping bag Bivvy bag (Gore-Tex) Axe Ferro rod set Pot, including the lid (2 qt) 550 Paracord (70m) 3.5 lb roll of snare wire Small gauge gill net (8m x 2m, 4-inch gauge) 300-yard roll of nylon single filament fishing line and 25...

Beat army surplus Bergen for hiking?

The Dutch army Sting has a volume of 60 litres plus 2x 10 litres in the detachable side pouches. Into the side pouch fits very well a German army mess kit and a US army canteen on top of it with still a bit room aside, let's say for a sitting pad. I don't own the British Osprey field bottle...

    quest for a new knife

I think that the stainless Morakniv Garberg with leather sheath is a pretty disaster proof option. But the Casström No10 is surely a very good choice. The Garberg has the surely more robust tang.

You can also look through all their offers, and look at the weight of the mummy shape sleeping bags. You search for one that has the same weight, length, width and same sort off filling (polyester / down) as your sleeping bag and can assume that it has approximately the same comfort temperature...

    Tarp and wood stove combo

You could make yourself two additional triangles, one of lightweight plastic fabric, that's the entrance, perhaps with a zipper, the other one of fire retardant cotton for the stove side. The tarp in A-frame set up as a roof. Don't connect the tarp and the door side triangle. You close the gap...

    Feedback

Well, and if I don't like what a member is usually interested in or writing I simply don't read it. I don't care for insects for example. They may crouch where they want and if you like talking about it, just do it if you like.

    Not quite a Seax.

To be honest, I even don't care if one tries to convert an original old sword into a screwdriver. :cigar:

Normally the heavier one is the warmer one if they are new. Old fibres may break like dry spaghetti though why your lighter and newer one might be as warm as the heavier old one. Have a look at the Snugpak Special Forces system and the videos about it as well as the combination of Carinthia...

    Not quite a Seax.

I wouldn't destroy a totally fine tool in order to make a weird pseudo historical thing from it. If you want a reproduction of a historical sword, so get a close one!

    Mess kits

Usually and generally the M numbers are a later given collectors name, it means the year of construction or introduction. The Swiss army gives the items indeed the names itself, here stands the year without M. And engraved or printed you find usually the year or even month of production, I...

    quest for a new knife

Oh, yes! German internet shops are still full of the old name. That knife is a Woodlore clone with less pronounced handle for a fraction of the price. It isn't easy to tell the differences to a Casström Lars Fällt knife.

    Hexpeak v4a vs lanshan 1

Congratulations! If there a trees in your area think about buying in a boat shop rather expensive 2,5 mm line and hang the tent under some kind of washing line. That eliminates the rather disturbing pole in the middle of the tent and some weight in the rucksack. I use Edelrid Multicord SP 2,5...
