Hennnesy is a brandy tho, so using it won'tr be too much different to using a Greek or Italian or even a cheap Australian brandy.
Just because it's called Cognac doesn't mean it tastes much better.
Which segues into the question about rebottling cheap whisky into a flagon with wood chips and...
Just to be on the safe side I might sample after another couple of days and if it is starting to get that sour cherry/bitter almond bite I'll strain sooner.
Does cyanide accumulate?
Yes I suppose it is a risk but one we have lived with for tens of thousands of years. We seem to like the taste of a small amount of bitter almond or marzipan wouldn't be so popular
Interestingly [ or not] somebody just gifted us a couple of kilos of over ripe red cherries so I've started a batch of cheery cherry brandy.
After stripping the stalks and discarding the rotten ones I would up with 1700 grams of fruit, I measured out 1200 grams of raw sugar and pummeled it with...
Speaking as an ex-climber I'd say that there was a huge difference between a bivvy bag and a sleeping bag cover.
A sleeping bag cover has this big hole in the end to allow entry and exit and may or may not be taped along the seams. May or may not have a zip to ease entry and exit
A bivvy bag...
Any Silky brand saw is worth the money.
Although mine is the Sukoi 420 as I had a need for a bigger blade for pruning purposes. I find the curved blades work very well and bigger blades cut better and faster.
I also have the Yoki slashing blade and that is a real beast and can be sharpened to a...
So if you wanted a brew you had to unpack your mess tins?
Just out of interest what did you pack in said rectangular tins? We poor second class chocolate soldiers were never given instructions on that so we stuffed in whatever we could. Only the regulars got the steel kidney cup; we got an OD...
I actually bought one just to see what they were like, mine came with a stainless steel cup on the bottom and a black plastic cup on the top. Obviously made at a different time and to a slightly different mould, I had to modify the water bottle with a sharp knife so the cup would fit.
Doing some semi-extensive Googling [ OK So I looked up a few cooking pages] most people use rather less sugar that I would but also fewer blackberries. What I made for this festive season was a batch of Kupilka/Krupnikas, the spiced honey spirit from Poland and Ukraine.
While I've never made it myself I doubt you would go wrong using equal quantities of sugar and fruit.
You will wind up with something well South of 17% ABV tho as fruit is at least 90% water. Can you get a few litres of Everclear?
Just guessing but a litre of Everclear to a kilo or so of fruit...
Belt carry or rucksack?
Solo or two-up or more?
If rucksack a big one or the small daypack?
Context- context is everything.
Nostalgia tastes better and better as I get older and older so even if it does weigh a tonne I often take my issue "cups canteen" but with an upgraded Oasis water...
After I hit 50 I decided comfort and warmth was more important than cheap.
After 70 it's even more important
Until than I used the combination of a Karrimat and a short Thermarest [ which I still have as a back-up] then I got myself a wide RidgeRest and used that with a wide CCF for insulation...
Down is shipped from China Vacuum packed and as dense as iron. Western Mountaineering ship their sleeping bags in the stuff sack, as do most companies because retailers simply do not have the space to store lofted bags. Compression doesn't hurt good quality down, it will hurt the feather...
Personal interest in old gear. I use it around town where weight isn't an issue. But I'm also in the middle of replicating all my old issue gear and a set-up duplicating both my uncles services in Nuigini in WW2 and Malaya /Vietnam as part of an inheritance for my daughter.
In the bush I use...
Details of the replacement WB?
The issue WW2 bottles fetch big money if in good condition; up to $70- each now, but most are in a pretty poor state after 80 years
Depending on which service they went too and when, they could also be Airforce Grey-Blue or dark jungle green. And no matter what the original colour they were supposed to be maintained with Blanco which was a coloured clay product.
They were still being made in the 1950s here in Oz and they...
