Dated dressings - would you use if needed?

Provided it is a plain cotton dressing has been kept dry throughout its storage life it should be fine. But.. Trauma dressings impregnated with a silica or clay based hemostasis accelerator the literature gets a little vaguer. Again these should work ok as basic bandages however atmospheric...

What are you buying yourself for Christmas?

Got an itch for a big blade, currently torn between a Buckland chopper or V2 Utility knife. Wife says I'm getting a cat flap to fit so I stop grumbling at 5am when the dam thing wants out.

    Cloak/ shelter thing

Possibly one of the most interesting ideas to come out of brainstorming was from Six Moon Designs in 2006 when they pitched the "GreatWood Cape". Where instead of two separate capes joining to form a shelter, the shelter is more asymmetric like a pointed bivi and folds back onto itself to become...

Pathfinder pot, zebra billy, or alternative?

Big fan of re-purposing kitchen canisters myself particularly the "Minion" style ones. These are a couple of spares knocking about the shed at the moment. Apologies they are a bit grubby,I have been using as ban-marries for melting candlewax Mr Fenna mentioned nesting earlier and would add...

    W.T.B.Sterno Inferno Stove

It's OK Tiley you are not going mad, the stove is/was geared to the American market designed to take Sterno-Tins. Trangia burners will work but suffer from thermal feedback, Hiram suggests folk experiment with smaller cat-can type stoves. On the flipside the boil time is really impressive.

    Cook kit conundrums

We chop, we change there is no shame. Sometimes out of necessity more often curiosity. For many years I was Meths addict who fell in love with gasification till after a brief flirtation with bottled gas I was tempted away back to the wild by a folding twig burner. Unfortunately since lockdown...

    Cook kit conundrums

Must admit the distilling ones own alcohol does have a traditional appeal. Alternatively if there is space for a tinfoil stove snuffer then you could change out the fuel bottle for a twist cap dropper type. These can easily suck up most of any excess fuel at the end of the cooking...

How do I know where it’s OK to camp?

Beaches (between low & high water marks) are one the few places it's legal to camp without asking permission in Wales & England. Dunes vary and are off limits for camping if part of a nature reserve or have an SSSI (site of special scientific interest) order on them. Then of course there is...

What's the best pocket /keyring torch?

Personal carry favorite is a generic Cree-Q5. Little bit chunky for a keyring but nice fit for pocket & utility pouches. Impressively bright for its size, good room illumination on wide beam. Tight beam more than adequate to scare some scroat who thought they were hidden in the bushes at 30...
