    Keeping closed.

yeah, varnish seems like the best thing to try. Get some dry, very dry, then dip in varnish, might do two coats, one thinned a little. Allow to drain and dry. That should impede them taking on moisture, but I would not want to bet that it would stop them entirely.

    XL Secateurs

Felco...pah ;) While I doubt they have something that TeeDee was looking for, no thread on secateurs and pruning tools would be complete without mentioning Niwaki! Beware....can be like Axminster and Heinnie...habit forming! https://www.niwaki.com/secateurs/ Felco make their premium models...

Bushcraft licence to and from the Moot to a place of Residence !

Just note that this thread had been inactive for seven years, and Interceptor Boy, the originator, did not pursue the subject for the next five years, suggesting that what had been said on the subject was enough. He has not been on the forum now for two years, so further replies addressing his...

    Question on Limestone.

Lime vs diatomaceous earth? Ant powder contains permethrin and talc. Lasts a long time under a stone. Not really the same thing as asked though. My grandfather in the US described something that would do just what the OP was asking about. A ring of this powder, sprinkled right around the...

    What made this turd?

At least you didn't tell me it was a small dinosaur

    Question on Limestone.

Not even slightly. Interesting way you phrase that. Are you hoping that you can keep insects away from the wall, or that a wall will keep insects away from something you have surrounded with the wall? Are you talking about a retaining wall, so soil on one side and open to the air on the other...

    What made this turd?

Any ideas how far such a hen will travel from nest to latrine site? 50m? more, less? My parents have food out for the birds, so there is a reason to come to the garden for a pheasant looking for a feed.

    What made this turd?

We thought it looked bird like, but too big for the usual garden visitors.

    What made this turd?

There has been a repeat large turd like this, in the same spot on my parents’ lawn. There was one on Sunday morning, and having removed it, there is another there this morning. We are thinking that the size and repeats suggest fox, but we have never had such a persistent fox before. We are...

    Afghan pressure cooker lead poisoning

In this case the the high lead content is likely exacerbated by melting things like Babbit bearings, batteries and soldered components in with the aluminium.

    Afghan pressure cooker lead poisoning

Just saw an article in the Telegraph describing how Afghans are being poisoned through lead leaching from their pressure cookers, made of low grade, contaminated, recycled metal. Research showing the same can be found elsewhere, and was reported on years ago, but this was the first I had heard...

    Buying event tickets

Winter moot tickets are not live yet. Please tell your friends to be patient a little longer. :camping: Tony has not been on the forum since the 12th, probably taking a well needed breather and break after the work involved in putting on the Summer Moot. It is summer holiday time too. I...

    Robust wildlife hide

If the deer can smell your repellent, they can smell you too. So unless your deer are more afraid of bog myrtle than people, I would not worry. Picaradine isn't too smelly, and works.

    Why a tarp?

If you think 1kg = very light weight for 3m x 3m you need to handle some 1.1oz sil-nylon or sil-poly! :bigok: My big hammock tarp, which has a little more coverage than that is 550g.

    Why a tarp?

Tarp shelter to sleep in or under, vs a tarp to provide camp shelter. I like my hammock, so use a tarp with that when I can hang. Camping with family or friends, a tarp can be strung between trees, poles or paddles to provide a dry kitchen, storage and eating area for the group. Ray Jardine in...
