Some of the other hills in the Southern Highlands are quite straight forward if Schiehallion seems a bit much. Ben Chonzie has a bulldozed track most of the way up or you could try East & West Lomond for an easy day out.
I think the logic is that the higher you go the closer to the source and the less chance of contamination. In the mountains this makes sense. I’ve been on mountaineering expeditions where the river water is full of silt (this can give you diarrhoea and clogs filters very quickly) but with a...
I bought one of these pouches from Survival Aids back in the early 90’s as it was the pouch Lofty Wiseman used in his instructional videos and is fits the description in his book. I used it a bit as a youngster but eventually sold it 15 years later for about £50 as they were quite sort after...
You can, but it’s normal on a long walk in to drop the axe through the bottom loop then fold it over and buckle the shaft near the lid. The top buckles should be horizontal whereas on the Centurio they are vertical. You can kind of make it work but it’s like Berghaus have forgot their heritage...
I’
I’ve got both, Berghaus didn’t quite get it right with the Centurio but that’s just my opinion. The Centurio is squarer and has a more comfortable back system but it’s also a fair bit heavier than the Munro. The plastic loops on the front are set up wrong for an ice axe (correct on the...
I’d punt for the Munro it’s hard to beat IMO. SMG are a good brand and I’ve had a few of their bags over the years. One thing to note with SMG is that they don’t generally come with a frame - the bags I’ve had I’ve added one cannibalised off other old packs. The newer SMG packs have slots for a...
Look for an Optimus / Primus 00 on Marketplace / eBay. I’ve seen mint 00,S going for £30. Carboot sales are good for old stoves too. Old paraffin stove sometimes take a bit of fettling to get going so you might need a service kit and a bit of homework time too.
I would recommend the Nalgene stainless bottle - Nalgene fits some MSR filters directly. Most purification tablets are for a litre so this is worth considering too.
Brown bag milbank filter is a good option if you can’t find an issue one.
Ray’s rucksack pictured was a bespoke item made by SMG. They still make packs and may do a mod for you if you contact them. They make other packs (Cullin 1,2 and 3) they’re hard wearing no nonsense styles ideal for Bushcraft. https://www.cuillinsacs.com/
Got a few items for sale folks:
Mammut Tyin winter sleeping bag - never used (max height 165cm). Ideal bag for winter just a bit short for me. £100 posted
Please ask any questions, trades wise after a handmade bucksaw, Arktis or Buffalo Windshirt (38 / M) or TBS 750ml billy pot. Postage...
Good kit the old Cadet Smocks - green for Adventurous Training in cotton and orange for RAF Mountain Rescue Teams. Lots of good info here: http://www.smhc.co.uk/search.asp?ftxt=Enter+Keyword...&db=1&cats=12&x=188&y=17
Big Monster, where are those green plastic cups from?
On my wish list is a Snowsled Classic or Survival Aids Ventile smock - sadly neither are made anymore so it might be a long wait until one appears on eBay!
A smaller (and better IMO) option would be a second hand Berghaus Cyclops Roc. They usually go for £40-£50 and hold 70 litres which is plenty. The Roc is a much more comfortable carry than the issue bergan and comes in different back sizes. You can also pick up second hand Crusaders/ Vulcans for...
