    What exactly is this?

Yup, this palm is the real thing. At one time, they used to ship them in a flattened form and , to get them to fit comfortably, you soak it in water for an hour or so, then it will easily conform to your hand shape. The downside, is that you have to keep it on the hand awhiles,, til it starts...

Working with leather for the first time

A, Glovers needle, is designed for handstitching in just that sort of material. The end opposite the eye, is triangular in section, and, un-like a sail-needle, it is sharpened on the flats, right next to the tip. This will easily handle the leather you have, but, if you have very large mitts and...

Split Faced Monkey Fist Knot (ABOK 2207) Tutorial

Ahhhhhhh! "pull the dowels out, to release the knot". Ruefully, I just have to say that, this one priceless bit of info would have saved me from a rather dramatic and self-recriminatory episode, this morning. As is my wont, I dived right in and fabbed up a jig with scantlins and durability...

Split Faced Monkey Fist Knot (ABOK 2207) Tutorial

Very well done. I have never before seen the use of a mandrel for the MF and I am impressed. I was doing a bit of knotwork this weekend, for a local historic marine society, and got absolutely fed-up with Stars and coxcombing on curtain rings....this tutorial of yours, is something I just have...

    What did you buy today?

A clonking great spool of bonded nylon sewing thread, size metric 10. estimated 1.5 k. It sure will last me out, a lot longer than the mobility of my hands, or eyesight. Very pleased with it. Tough as old boots and it handsews like a dream. Ceeg

The postman was kind yesterday, got a delivery from down under.

The Alvey is not unknown among the Yorkshire Rock angling lads. Apparently, they're ideal for skull-dragging large fish from the cliff marks. Hope you greatly enjoy using it. I think I remember that particular RH program, very "gimmee" Ceeg

    Vigil for Skadi

Oh, that is really bad to lose a canine pal. We are taking on a Lab, this coming Sunday and it has been a long 16 months to get anywhere near to feeling as if coping with the loss of the previous dog. I do think that it will be a bit throat-catchy with the new lad. Hope that things ease for...

    Care for your compass???

Evening Alex. Compass care was a big deal for mariners of yore. Even today, most all electrical equipment you find on the Bridge, is likely to have a small panel on the reverse, showing its compass safe distance. The other effects were monitored by regular compass error obs's and annual...

Enormous Augers - and an unusual handle

The pics remind me very much of the tools used by the yards which built the old wooden keels. Recently saw something similar being used to drill out the tie-rod holes in wooden leeboards. And, by golly, the large ones would make beaut marlinespikes. Regards Ceeg

    Stopping smoking, anyone with me?

I am well over 7 months without my pipe and its getting that I don't recall the last time I had my pipe out for a looksee. Not Smoking dosn't really bother me... Except, for a few weeks quite recently, I was getting bothered from time to time, by a horrible sensation of burnt , stale...

    Hat help

There is yet another way which may just work, and its nothing to do with new wires or beeswax. You could try the method I use for hats which are just a bit too big. Tension... I'm talking about beefing up the stern section by adding a few rows of tight stitches. In a compatible colour, you...

    Hat help

Quite right too. To get the best effect, dip the whole brim, just rotate it slowly and then wheek it out. Probably need to get rid of the excess by wafting all over with the wifes hairdryer set high. Newspaper is your best pal. But dont be tempted to burnish or buff the rim, once dipped, or...
